There is a large map board just behind the car park at the bottom of the trails and there are others at various places. The map is indicative rather than precise but don't let that throw you. There is a forestry road that goes up to the top of the hill. The singletrack trails hang off it. Hence it's not difficult to find your way around. Overall, the area is reasonably visitor friendly.
There is a short easy trail for beginners called Hawk Eye that starts near the car park. Most of the trails are intermediate or advanced and they can be treacherous in places after rain.
The trails are generally old-school with not a lot of good fun stuff on them but there are couple of worthwhile jump zones. The newest trail called "Black Track" is the best. It's machine made with lots of fun stuff including some nice table tops. It runs down beside the forestry road.

Head out of Whangarei on Riverside Drive, go left up Memorial Drive, then right up Pararua Bay Road, then left into Abbey Caves Road. Watch out for the trails car park about a kilometer past the Abbey Caves car park. There is no sign by the road. Yes, that's complicated. The easy option is to let the singletracks app take you there. An alternative which takes you to the top of the trails is to follow Memorial Drive to the end where there is a car park and lookout.
When I rode the trails in February 2016, they were looking tired with quite a lot of overhanging gorse and brush. But I had some fun on the jumps and Black Track and the other trails weren't bad if not classy.
