Mountain Biking Polecat Creek Trail
#38 of 128 mountain bike trails in Illinois
This is a very simple trail looping through Hedge (Osage Orange) and Hickorys. It runs fast along the creek bank offers simple dodges through the trees. Don't plan for this to be the only trail you ride, rather add it among the trails available in the Lick Creek area. This and the East Lick Creek Trail are adjacent to a great paved bike lane planned to stretch between Chatham and Springfield.

Interstate 55 South of Springfield to Toronto Road. Turn West off Toronto Road exit. Toronto Road will become Woodside Rd. soon after 4-way stop. Stay on Woodside to RR crossing. Make immediate left (south) after RR Crossing onto Pedigo Lane (total distance from I-55 - 2.2 miles); parking available immediately on left in gravel lot. Head south on Pedigo Lane (a blacktop road) Road splits into paved bike lane.) Trailhead on right about 1.5 miles from parking. Park sign indicates trailhead.
I rode this in mid August 2024. There is actually a loop within the loop (there is a cut-off if you don't want to do it) that has some very challenging climbs. Lots of roots to navigate, which makes it rather technically challenging. Be wary of some vegetation growth overhanging into the trail as you could be swiping past poison ivy.
Thank |This is a great little hidden gem. The local mtb riders have turned this into one of the nicest little runs in Illinois.
Thank |Plenty of jumps, switchbacks and hard climbs and fast shoots. Run this with Lick Creek. Three part single track great ride.
Two parts where I had to dismount and walk my bike over giant trees that had fallen down. Very easy trail, only one climb that was moderately difficult (it was also snowy).
Thank |I rode this trail a day after heavy rainfall and still had a blast. I will definately ride again when the ground is more solid.
