Mountain Biking Rabbit Island
#126 of 193 mountain bike trails in South Island
Rabbit Island is a forested reserve about 25km east of Nelson City. The Great Taste Trail goes through it, entering by the road and exiting by the Mapua ferry. The island is popular in summer for the beach, BBQs and biking.
The little bike park is good for beginners with about 3km of easy trails that meander through the pine forest. The trails are curvy, gently undulating and there are even some slightly banked corners. In a grassed area there are a couple of flat topped logs for skill building. The beach is just metres away for a cool off after the ride.
After a few circuits of the park its fun to ride to Mapua and cross over on the ferry for a wander round the shops, a beer or an ice cream.

Ride the 30km out from Nelson City on the Great Taste Trail or drive onto the island. Look for the bike park just past the first toilet you come to after the end on the tarseal on the road that goes along by the beach. Alternatively, a nice way to get to it is to park at Mapua, cross over to the island on the ferry and ride the couple of kilometres down the Great Taste Trail.
