Mountain Biking Raincliff
#159 of 193 mountain bike trails in South Island
All the trails are pure soil. They can be very slipperey in the wet although it takes alot of rain to get them wet. There are plenty of trails here for XC riders. There are also the Jawbone and RIbcage trails that are for the Downhill/enduro riders, These are complete with jumps and drops and berms.

starting from The Timaru Library Head North past the large cathedral until you get to the State Highway. Carry on along the State Highway right until the north end of washdyke where you turn left onto Pleasant point Highway (SH8) Carry on until you reach Pleasant point. Turn Right the the Hotel and Gas Station onto Tengawai Road. follow until you turn left on a very sharp 3 way corner onto Totara Valley road. Follow until You pass Cleland road and it turns into Monument road. follow for about a Kilometer until the road turns into raincliff road. Follow this road until you pass the youth camp. It then turns into Middle Valley road. Follow this road until it turns into gravel. Keep following it until the road is completely surrounded by forest. The entrance is Immediately on the right and is easy to miss.
Raincliff Forest is not extensive - about 2km from one end to the other - but you need to go with a local to find the good singletrack. The map board at the car park is sketchy and out of date. There are signs at the beginning of some trails but before long you'll meet a fork with no sign. There is no good climbing singletrack. You ride up Middle Valley Road, then a 4wd track which takes you to the top of the forest. McKay Track no longer exists so take Hoare Track until you lose it by taking the wrong fork! Don't worry though, you'll soon pop out on Middle Valley Road. Then you can climb back to the top and try other forks till you've had enough.
Despite some nice singletrack features here and there, Rainclilff forest doesn't really cut it as a mountain bike park. It's isolated too - a 40 minute drive from Timaru.
