Mountain Biking Ramapo Mountain State Forest

*****   Add a review
#17 of 111 mountain bike trails in New Jersey
#1,316 in the world

This hilly forest is a sanctuary for wildlife. Hikers and mountain bikers enjoy miles of challenging trails. Many trails offer a view of the New York City skyline. Birdwatchers are attracted to the forest for its ponds, streams and marshes that provide the perfect habitat for bird and other wildlife species. The forest borders the Ramapo Mountain Reservation, which is part of the Bergen County Park System.

Red - (Cannonball) The upper section of this trail contains a very technical and tight rocky switchback with a small stream crossing. The lower section by the i287 overpass consists of mostly rocky Doubletrack.
Orange - The best direction to ride this trail would be to start from the north off the blue trail. This trail presents a challenging mix of rocky Singletrack and Doubletrack that takes you to the top of the Wanque ridge. The ridge offers a great view and a fun ride along its edge.
Yellow - From the top of Skyline Dr down to the lake you will find a mix of Fire Road and rocky Singletrack. The short section by i287 overpass starts out with a short Singletrack and ends with a long Fire Road descent
Indian Trail - This trail offers a fast rocky descent to the Wanaque River.
Blue - The northern section of this trail is all Doubletrack which leads to the lake. The lower section which takes you to the main parking lot is for hikers only.

Tried to ride this the other day. I'm surprised its rated as intermediate. I think it may be more advanced vs stephens state park that is advanced could be intermediate. Lots of very heavily rocky areas that were medium sized and on a grade. Definitely technical. my pedals and cranks still took a beating even though I tried to keep them leveled. still seems like a nice system I would definitely go back once i've worked on more technical skills.

Fun but not for beginners. I assume you could find some easy stuff anywhere but there's plenty of incredibly difficult terrain and has a lot of hiking a bike if you're not very good and you can't climb well.. the views are great and there is tremendous variance of terrain highly recommended to explore different areas.

Trail can get tricky for beginners. I wouldn't say its easy but that depends on the trail you take and entrance you pick.

Has a combination of technical single track and easy gravel trails. The lake is beautiful.

Rider questions

Q: i attempted riding in this park recently, parking in lot off skyline drive. Entrance steep and not easily rideable. Is there another parking lot, and which single track trails are good for riding?
A: i did the north blue to orange to red(indian) the entance is on mcatee ave in wanaque the entrance is a little hidden

Q: I wanted to introduce my 8 year son to mountain biking. Was wondering what would be a good entrance and trail to take for a beginner?
