Mountain Biking Rockwood Park

**   Add a review
#188 of 300 mountain bike trails in Virginia
#7,366 in the world

This is a small network of singletrack that criss-crosses a 1.2 mile paved loop. One mildly technical section near the pond in the back. This trail is similar to Deep Run but smaller. Not to bad if you live close...but I wouldn't go out of my way for this one

Rockwood trails are not maintained for mountain bike riding and they are quite old and in need of TLC. The park is much more suited for hiking or trail running.

Very simple, not very technical. Great place to learn the ropes of shifting & braking for corners and hills, nothing too tight or too steep, stays wide the whole way through. Have to watch for pedestrians.

Went out for the first time to Rockwood to ride it and didn't stay long. Lots and lots of people walking even on the single track trails. Definitely an ok beginner trails sans the amount of walkers.

I just checked out Rockwood Park (again) after quite a while. It was the same as before... The double track paved trails are loaded with people walking dogs, jogging, etc... So, it is wise to immediately hop on one of the small singletracks and head into the woods. Even those are not that difficult. I found only one that was challenging with big tree roots and a few rocks, and it was down near the pond. You still have to pay attention on some of the steep descents, because all of the sudden, there will be a wicked 90° hairpin at the bottom.

In a nutshell: Rockwood Park is a very very easy place to ride, work on speed, and maybe test out a new bike (or check one that you've tweaked/repaired).

My friend and I covered the whole trail in roughly two hours, the three paved tracks were easy, with some steep climbs and descents with sharp corners, of all of the other trails though, only one of them really came up to an intermediate/more difficult rating.* Review edited 4/16/2012

Just like what I wrote for the review of Deep Run Park... This place is meant for newbies who just got a MTB from Target or Wally World.

Stay off the paved trails if you can. At the first sign of a singletrack, immediately take it and venture into the woods. There's just way way too many people (new moms with baby strollers, little old ladies walking their yappy little terriers, etc..) on the paved trails.

There is nothing really special here, just like at Deep Run Park, except *maybe* a small technical part of a run, but nothing to write home about.* Review edited 5/6/2010
