Mountain Biking Rocky Hill Ranch

****   Add a review
#3 of 279 mountain bike trails in Texas
#189 in the world

Over the since 2021 tremendous changes have been undertaken at Rocky Hill Ranch. A sale of part of the ranch left 6.5 miles of singletrack, which has been increased to 16.5 miles. Everything about the trails is better than ever and there is something for everyone. Trails are signed with names, rating, and info for shorter loops that can provide 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9 mile rides. Additionally, there is a Green loop that can be up to 10 miles, with plenty of options to bail at road crossings and follow "HOME" signs back to the car. The trails can be found on MTBProject and Trailforks phone apps. Download the latest "Texas" area file to have the latest map. Rocky Hill Ranch is open 24/7/365 and has both primitive camping and RV spots with electricity and water. There are showers and restrooms. Sadly, the former Rocky Hill Saloon in now used as a covered pavilion for groups to gather or as shelter from sun and weather. More info at www.RockyHillRanch.com If you haven't been to Rocky Hill Ranch since before 2022 you will find a completely different trail system with lots of short climbs, switchbacks, berms and technical trail features set in a continuous loop that is easy to follow. Come get some!

Trail marking is confusing. I spent more time to read map than riding. The owner put an iron chain to block riders to get into the camping /residential area without a warning sign, which caused the crash and the injury. Other riders I met complained too.

Later, I contacted the owner for the expense of my injury (only a couple hundred dollars). The owner was very arrogant and didn't care about the safety.

If you have to pay for a ride, go to the neighbored ranch - Bluff Creek which is only 10-20 minutes drive and the trail is single track. No need to read the map for multiple times.

Fun network! I wasn't in my best shape when we went, so I'd definitely head back to check them out again. They were building a free ride section next door, but it seems thats a separate fee unfortunately. Good mix of trail textures, nothing too technical.

It's a trail system pretty fun to ride! I didn't have enough time so I just did a 9mile closer loop, including Black Trac, which was my favorite segment(wooden features, nice dirt and pretty trees, techy but rideable descents and ascents).
It seems there are a lot events/races going on here so definitely check out their website in case the trail is closed for race!
The majority of the trail system is flowy, and total 30miles makes it a perfect place for one day trip adventure riding (if you have never been here).
    I'll definitely come back!

For the first timer at this trail (beginner level) I recommend follow smile face on map provide by paid box. We found about that after we did the trail. This is Blue trail at least. a lot of depth hill. and up hill loose rocks. we have hard time climbing first part of the trail.

A lot of uphill at the 1/3 half of the map. The Grind area was fun consist of 3 big down hills With the small bridge in the middle. Got tired after 4 and half miles. I got to go back to try the rest of the map.

This is a great trail lots of fun, and easy drive from Houston. The big win here is that I lost my drivers license at night on the trail miles from camp, and I got it in the mail 2 days later from some kind stranger who gave me nothing but a note saying, "Have the Best Day!". What a great kindness. Thank you to whoever mailed me my DL.

The trails are in some of the best shape I've seen them in years. Yes the water stations rant always full, but if you bring your own you won't need them. Signage has been worked on lately, be sure to grad a map when registering.

Trails were NOT marked clearly. Watering holes they brag about are empty. Restaurant/beer barn is closed. My understanding is new management and they are not taking good care of trails. $10 a person is way too much for these trails. Lots of work needed. Again trails are NOT marked clearly.

Awesome trails! lots of ascents and descents. Need to be careful with all of the loose rock trails. Water is throughout the trail in Gatorade coolers under awnings, spaced perfectly.

Rode yesterday for the first time, and will definitely be back ASAP! Track overall was dry, but be careful when you get to The Wall as it had some sticky red mud at the bottom. Enjoy.

We had a lot of fun out here on Sunday. The beginning and Fat Chuck, oh man, better find the right gear and strap on your big boy undies. After the start, it's flowy, fun, and fast. Some great downhills, couple jumps, some technical areas. All around good time. You can tell a lot of effort is put in to make this a fun place for mountain bikers.

This is definitely one of the better trail systems in Texas and a great place to just hang out for a few days. Nothing real challenging, just some short steep climbs and the usual rocky, rooty Texas trails.

This trail is awesome. A must ride. When I first rode it a few years back I remembered a rocky initial climb followed by a nice smooth ride over pine needles, but when I went down there in July it seemed like the whole course was rocky. Not sure if that is a seasonal thing or a delusion caused by heat stroke, but the ride was pretty jarring on the ol' hardtail. Still one of the best mountain bike destinations in Texas. A great place to camp and ride. They have water stations on the trail, free showers, fire pits, and a restaurant/bar on the weekends.

Just rode for the first time. Hit literally every section of trail on the map. Great network of trails and decent variability in trail/terrain type--smooth sandy, hard packed, flowy, a few climbs and a few nice mild downhill sections. Even found a few doubles out there toward the exit and jumped everything a few times. Will be back 100%

I loved this trail! Although not difficult at all, it flows very well and the trails are well thought out. This was completely different then what I'm used to riding, no rocks, no real elevation change, lots of roots and lots of fast, flowing, smooth riding. I went on memorial day and pretty much had the trails to myself. The only complaints I have is that there were a lot of downed trees in the trails, at least 10. so it got a little annoying to be riding on a perfect trail and then have to dismount and lift your bike over the trees. All and all I had a great time and will return. one bonus that I hadn't anticipated was riding on pine needles and the prevalent scent of pine trees

Very fun trail. Beautiful scenery and nice varied terrain. When I rode there were a few drawbacks, however. There were many, many downed trees, some trails were very sandy (especially about half through), and signage was confusing due to the recent Austin Rattler race. All in all though, it was a lot of fun.

As others have said, this is a mostly smooth, flowy trail system. A few rocks/ a few roots in sections.
Even Fat Chuck isn't really that bad, in terms of climbing and gradient.
They offer a map; have to pay $10 fee, but well worth it. About 30 miles SE of Austin, so a bit of a drive.
We did various loops, about 10 miles total, and really didn't hit 1/2 of the trails.
Highly recommended if you enjoy flowy intermediate trails

Awesome trails, very well maintained, very well managed. If I lived closer, I'd be out here all the time. They have several camping sites, showers and restrooms at the trailhead, and water stations throughout the property. Although there is some jeep road and fence line riding, must of the trail is sweet, flowy singletrack. Lots of pine trees and hardwoods to keep you shaded and keep you guessing whats around the next turn. My favorites are "the Grind" and "the Wall." Both are deep drop-ins with a big ascent on the other side. If you can convince yourself to drop-in at or near full speed, you can clear the climb back out. They both flow well so the only obstacle is fear. I rode this trail as part of a team at the "24 hours of Rocky Hill Race" in Oct, 2011. I absolutely loved it and the night riding was amazing.

My favorite trail in Texas. Great swoopy, flowibg single track once one gets past Fat Chucks. All segments are well marked at the trails are very well maintained. As of spring of 2010 the original tenants, the owners, Pam and Grey, are once again managing the land. Water points are kept filled. The Salloon Cafe is gone, however the owners intend to convert into a convenience type store. Get your after ride jalapeno cheesburgers at the Roadhouse outside Bastrop State Park. The Salloon Building does have working showers for post ride; also camping on site. More difficult due to length, Fat Chuck;s, and the Texas heat.
