Mountain Biking Roxburgh Gorge North
#56 of 193 mountain bike trails in South Island
The Roxburgh Gorge Trail doesn't go right through the gorge. There is a 10 km gap in the middle where you have to take a boat. That's part of the adventure but many people do two out-and-back rides. This, the Roxburgh Gorge North trail, is the ride from Alexandra at the north end of the gorge. It goes 10 km down the gorge beside the river as it morphs into Lake Roxburgh.
The trail is wide, smooth and rated easy except for a very small section with a few tight switchbacks and a little exposure. The gradient is always gentle but the trail undulates enough to make it a mellow workout.
The gorge is rugged, rocky, arid and stark; the river-lake is blue and majestic. Along the way there a few signs of gold mining activities from last century. It's an awesome part of the planet.

From downtown Alexandra head south towards Roxburgh, cross the bridge over the Clutha River and the track is on the river bank right under the bridge. The trail goes both ways - the Gorge Trail is downstream.
