Rusty Lung is the new-and-improved, legalized version of the oldest mountain bike trail in Salida: Sunset. Sunset was originally kicked in by mountain biking legends Mike Rust (watch "The Rider and the Wolf" for more on Mike Rust) and Don McClung. Hence, the new name: Rusty Lung. Part of the original trail alignment was kept, and the rest of the trail was all-new.
This singletrack now forms a new way to get up the mountain side, running from Spiral Drive up to the saddle at the Little Rattler/Backbone junction, near North Backbone.
While it makes for a good climbing route, the builders (Tony Boone & Co.) definitely created some incredible downhill flow, with rollers, tight berms, jumps, doubles--you name it! While not expressly designed as a flow trail, you can't help but feel like a pro ripping down this incredible descent!
Rusty Lung will undoubtedly become one of the most popular trails in the Arkansas Hills Trail System.
Kind of in the similar vein as chicken dinner without the gnar up top. Lots of flowy berms, and smaller jumps. Fun singletrack!
Thank |Rusty Lung is a sweet, sweet addition to the Arkansas Hills! Having another climbing route will be superb for spreading out traffic, but of course, going downhill is more fun--and the flow, rhythm, and turns on Rusty Lung are top-notch! Some of the berms feel TIGHT, but you can really whip around them! Two thumbs up for this new trail!
