Mountain Biking Rutland State Forest
#76 of 223 mountain bike trails in Massachusetts
This is actually a network of trails/fire roads starting in Rutland and traveling throught to Barre Fall State park using fire roads. However ther are some amazing loops with in Rutland. Start on the fire road where you parked and work your way up to the old graffiti ravaged prison camps on the left - take that left and travel upwards and stay on this trail (no name). This will take you around the forest. You will eventually come to an old train track that is now paved, and steep hills on either side so it is very narrow. But the scenery is breathtaking. Rest here a bit because then your in for a couple great climbs. Watch out for horseback riders and wild turkeys.

From Worcester - Tatnuck Sq area - follow Route 122 for about 10-15 miles into Rutland. Take a Right at the lake (which is on the left). Go up the road about 1/2 mile, take a left then an immedite right into the park. Drive about 2/3 of a mile through some beautiful scenery. You come to a small bridge and the road splits to fire road on the right and paves road on the left. There will ba a lake on the left and you'll be able to see a camping area across the lake.. Park anywhere.
This is perfect for anyone that does not want very challenging terrain, but still wants trails that go through the woods. Its been a while since i last went. I only rode the trails that go around whitehall pond, but i'm checking out more next time. The Mass Central Rail Trail also passes through the area. I think it also allows horse riding so be aware.
Thank |I have never been here before and spent about 2 hours exploring the area and all I could find were the prison camps. It seems like they have cut down a ton of trees where others had mapped their rides. Maybe I was looking in the wrong areas, but I probably won't be back.
Thank |Great for a relaxing ride. Went off the marked trail onto some old fire roads and it was slightly more difficult. Lots of wildlife. Highly recommend it if your not looking for anything too challenging.
Thank |There is a new parking area along Rt. 122 which is for the Mass Central Rail Trail. This connects to the roads mentioned above and has been improved, though new bridge construction is pending.
