Mountain Biking Sand Dunes

****   Add a review
#586 of 1,392 mountain bike trails in Colorado

Like Uncle Nazty which it parallels, this one is steep, has some very technical moments, and is only realistic as a dowhnill leg. The views are excellent and the singletrack highly entertaining. You may wonder why it's named Sand Dunes--you'll find out part way down--Surf's up, dude! (the dunes dont last long, then you're back on primo singletrack).

The top of this trail branches right off of CR 173 shortly before the turn to Pauli/Uncle Nazty. It drops all the way down to Frontside or you can exit onto Backbone about two thirds of the way down.

The lower sections of this advanced trail are often flooded out with gravel, sand, and other detritus, making it not-that-fun all the way down.

    Update 10/18/13:

While the lower sections aren't fun, the upper sections of this trail are fantastic! There a few challenging technical sections, but overall it's not as difficult as Uncle Nazty. However, the trail is absolutely gorgeous up high, with some incredible rock formations and beautiful views! Upgrading this to a 4-star rating.
