Mountain Biking Santeetlah Lake Trail

***   Add a review
#249 of 549 mountain bike trails in North Carolina
#6,309 in the world

It is old forest road, but is intermediate/difficult due to the variation of terrain. It needs to be ridden in to create a trail tread. Take the mountain bike. The mile markers on the trail and direction signage are good.

This two track starts on the west side of Lake Santeetlah about 5 miles west on 143 outside of Robbinsville. It begins with a solid bit of climbing for about 0.33 miles and then generally rolls downhill through long switchbacks (a signature for the first 5.5 mile section) for 1 mile to get near the shores of the lake. Small climbs punctuated with larger downhill sections make for a really fun ride with varying obstacles including rocks, downed trees and some gravel. Two large sections in the first two miles were really overgrown with thorned vines making for a painful experience. One larger uphill at about the 3.5 mile mark has loose large gravel and was beyond my abilities to ride. Finish the first loop by leaving the trail and climbing for about 0.75 mile on the winding paved 143. Cruise downhill back to your car in the parking lot for about 0.75 miles. Perfect loop for a perfect day.
