Needs work but has great potential. Currently no upkeep. Going to come back later to clean up leaves and debris. Rollers haven't been maintained either and looked weathered so we took the cheat lines. But it flows both directions, and we got some pretty decent speed once we cleared some larger limbs.
Absolutely no flow. No upkeep. Roots everywhere. The trail itself seems as if there is no purpose but instead meanders pointlessly around. Gokd idea. Bad execution. Maybe y spots did not accommodate nor.al wide bars. No markings for direction. Only one spot really needs them though.
Went in to hike this trail with others after the Whirleygig festival. The two tropical storms have brought down some big trees and it is clear that nobody goes here anymore. The upper half is walkable but a crew needs to come in with chainsaws and loppers to make it ride worthy. A lot of the old obstacles are rotted and unsafe. Someone is maintaining the ropes course as that has some new features, but I would not bother going here unless somebody reports improvements. I used to ride this when I lived nearby, but even with that is was hard to follow where the trail is.
Good track. Just needs some TLC. If you live around Wilson and don't have time to go to Raleigh it works for a good 45 minute workout. Two laps around and you will be sweating and legs burning. Lots of turns so very little flow spots, but there are obstacles strategically placed throughout the trail making it a little more interesting. Overall, good short track if you live close by.
Removed all limbs and debris on 11/27/16 and used a leaf blower to clean about 70% of the trail on 11/28/16. Will try to finish leaf removal next week.
Rode this morning for the 1st time. Nice trail and was a good length for me. Go in woods to the right of the ropes course sign to enter the bike trail or ride down the hill beside the road and enter in one of the openings (I recommend going in and to the left of the opening with the big tree). Plan to return and ride some more since it is within 30 minutes of my house. Need more people riding to keep spider webs to a minimum.
It's a beginner trail if you could actually see the trail. I rode this trail 1 years ago and it was in terrible shape. It's in even worse shape now. Two years ago I could follow the trail, but now I couldn't even determine exactly which way to go. If someone would show this trail some love, it could be really fast and fun. As it is, it's a complete waste of time.
Fun trail when its not infested with poison ivy. This trail is not maintained the best and trail and parking is sometimes gated off for no apparent reason.
Road the trail today for the first time, it is listed as beginner but thought it to be a nice challenge. The course is a bit hard to follow and I found myself completing only 2 or the advertised 3 miles. There are a few good obstacles, some coming out of no where, and a few narrow passes, but overall a nice right course. I did work to clear off all the spider webs throughout the trail... with my face. Should be clear for the next rider for at least a week. Seriously, like 400 webs with my face.
The trail is across the street from the NC School for the Deaf. There is a dirt parking area at the trailhead right off highway 301. Be careful pulling in not to get rear-ended - there is a short drop off the highway which requires a severe slow down and other drivers aren't expecting you to turn in. The trail wraps around the wooded area, and I have found that counter-clockwise seems to be the intended direction. The parking area seems to be one of the highest points on the trail.
The biggest asset of this trail is that it's all there is in Wilson. It's good practice for me because it constantly changes gears and there isn't a lot of coasting that can be done.
To me, the overall appeal of the trail is it location and that it can be ridden in a short amount of time - perfect for an after-work ride.
The trail is maintained but with so many switchbacks it's easy to double back on yourself because for much of the ride you are only a few feet from another section of the trail. There are 5 or 6 obstacles (that I've seen) that range from narrow bridges to log piles. All can be avoided if desired.
When it rains it takes a while for the trail to completely dry out because there is a swampy area on the far side of the trail. The wet spots of the trail make up only 5%-10% of the trail, but seem to stay wet long after the rest of the trail is dry.
The entrance is to the left of the parking area. I had to search a little before I found it. The trail needs some serious TLC. The trail is fairly flat for the most part. The hardest part is the fact that the trail is leaf covered and you can't see the roots so there's a lot of slipping around. Don't get off of the shingles that add traction to the bridges. The wood is really slick with a little moisture. It was a good ride while I was in the area.
Someone has done the periodic maint on this trail as it was mowed and some of the big leaning trees over the trail that I saw the last time have been taken out. I rode it this morning, then returned with a saw and did some trimming where it needed it, and shifted the fallen tree that was too big to jump. I cut the other end which was over another trail section so you can ride around if you don't want to try the log which is pretty big (now been cut back to trails edge).
The ramp that is pictured is showing its' age and has thorns on either side. It has a big snake under it too so you don't want to make a mistake on this.
THe north end has mud spots but is rideable in the area beyond the giant rooty tree.
So this trail is ride-able again. The heavy rains had exposed some broken glass in two areas, so I removed what I saw.
I pulled out some pricker things but didn't see anything vicious so the mower must have got them.
Ride it!
8/25/13 Rode it yesterday. Do a casual lap looking for vines or downed trees, clear any that you see then crank through it until you're tired.
If Wilson can get someone to come out and clean this trail up it would be decent for something close. I spent too much time going around fallen trees, vines and thorns to enjoy this trail. Until someone posts a clean up, don't waste your time.
As others have said, it's a short series of trails tucked away across from the school. The three nested loops have connections between them, so that you can vary the course each time you go through it.
Someone or group is maintaining them, as they're being mowed for the most part which helps when you're not familiar, but the last time I rode it, I went over a bridge that I don't recall being there before.
You can do the whole thing once in 40 minutes easy, and there are enough exposed tree roots to challenge an older rider just getting back into it.

Thank |Trail has recently been maintained. It is Still a little short, but ok place to ride for a beginner.

Thank |Good use of the small area but still a short trail. Not well maintained. Better used for jogging.

Thank |Good little trail. I will be repairing and adding some technical challenges soon. If anyone is interested in pitching in let me know.

Thank |Very well laid out trail system!
Thank |I've done some trimming and plan to do some bridge and obstacle repairs this winter.
Nice little single track sprinkled with some intermediate difficulty obstacles.

Thank |This trail is good for the locals, fun to ride real short with not that much change and excitement. many locals run the trail.
