Mountain Biking Skidmarks

#83 of 283 mountain bike trails in New Mexico
#5,632 in the world

This trail is a good trail to learn on for a beginner. Nothing too difficult, the trail is good for learning some semi-technical riding. There are some tricky (again, for beginners) rock bridges to cross, but nothing overwhelming. This is one of my first mountain biking trails, so I'm obviously a little partial to it. It is one of very few trails in the Roswell area.

Getting there
From downtown Roswell, take Hwy 380 east of town about 12 miles. Turn right at the Bottomless Lakes Recreation Area sign and go about five miles until the second paved road on the right. After about two hundred yards there is a gravel parking lot at the trailhead.

For what and where this trail is, I rank it a 4, but compared to all the other trails out there, it only gets a 3. I love miles and miles of trail and with this only at 3 miles, that is a bummer for me. Given that I was only in town 1 day, it was fine as I was able to do 5 laps, and didn't have to ride it again day after day. If in the area, it's worth the ride. For being in a flat desert area, there were plenty of small ups and downs, and more surprisingly, a lot of rock like large slickrocks. I found myself pushing to get faster as I got more familiar each lap and that was fun. It's not a destination, but more of a place to try out if you're visiting and want to ride. I have to add that my husband who rode with me hated it. He said there was a trail there just because there could be. To each his own!

Nothing hard, but the twisty trail keeps your attention. I always have fun riding here. It is a fee area. Locals are well served buying the State Parks Annual Pass.

Not a bad trail....not worth paying for however.. If you go, be sure to bring $5.....you dont want to get charged a fine for not paying the fee. Anyhow, had fun. Not too dificult, but definitely a slower trail. I will go back until i find a better trail within reasonable distance from roswell.

While camping at the park I rode this trail 8 times. It is short (3 miles) but a good ride if done each direction. This is a fee area so come prepared. There are enough little surprises to keep you on your toes. About 20 minutes to ride one way. Have fun.
