Mountain Biking Snodgrass
#94 of 1,392 mountain bike trails in Colorado
3.5 miles out and 3.5 miles back, Snodgrass is a nice little trail that is super twisty through the trees, and just a fun ride. Nothing super technical... there are a couple of short, steep hills, but the dirt is so tacky they are completely doable.

Head north out of Crested Butte towards the resort, hang a left on Washington Gulch, and the trail starts a couple miles down on the right. Snodgrass runs between Washington Gulch and Gothic road, so you could start on either end, or loop it. If you are riding it as an out and back, park down on Washington so you can do most of the climbing at the beginning.

We started from the northeast riding towards southwest midweek. The trail was surprisingly very busy both directions with hikers and bikers. I'm a barely intermediate MTBr so the 1-mile initial steep climb at the beginning was hike-a-bike (I didn't see any other biker successfully climb the whole way, either). Once at the top, the ride down was winding and fun. Not too many rocks but did hit my cranks many times; lots of roots. The flies and mosquitos were plentiful and annoying, but once we sprayed with deet-free Buzz Away they left us alone. Continued down Washington Gulch (which is a road), crossed Gothic Rd and headed mostly downhill into Crested Butte on the recreation path. Then hopped a shuttle bus headed to Gothic/Judd which dropped us back at the Snodgrass TH. Total about 9 miles ride. PS if you are a faster rider, don't get mad -- just announce yourself and I'm happy to pull over quickly (I had no idea you were behind me).
Thank |Just pure Crested Butte fun riding through the aspens.
Thank |We didn't really like this trail. Many sections were nice through aspens and meadows but some sections were unnecessarily steep. It looks like some recent route improvements have been made.
Thank |Close to ski resort. Took my wife on this one, Big mistake. The initial climb kicked her butt. By then it was a struggle for her. Has some nice flow areas in the pines and a fast downhill at the end. If coming from town take the bus with your bike and stay on it past the ski resort. You will save yourself a lot of climbing on Gothic road.
Thank |I wasn't overly impressed with Snodgrass. I enjoyed it some in the trees, but all in all it just seemed average and a bit overused.
Thank |we started on Snodgrass before hitting 401. Great ride to start, then hit some fire road climbing before getting to 401.

Thank |I rode all the way from town up past the resort and then to the trail head. I am apparently not as in as good of shape as most of the users here because when I saw the first portion of this trail soaring up, I just about wept. But once you get past that, it was really fun and beautiful ride. A nice introduction to Crested Butte riding. I wish I could find a trail that's about 20 miles of that. Up down, zipping through Aspens.
Thank |No way I was riding that back though. It spit me out onto Washington Gulch road which I rode back into town. It gave me about 14 miles of riding in total.
This trail was really easy and very scenic. The first climb is just a bit hard, but leads to a wonderful downhill route. It is very pretty yet really easy. This is a very fast route that you can possibly fit into a long day of fun riding

Thank |This is a gorgeous trail that is close to town and very easily accessible. It's not super long, but it's definitely worth a ride!
Thank |This is a fantastic 'ride from your garage' trail near Mount Crested Butte ski area. If I lived here, and I definitely want to, this would be a fantastic lunch loop or evening quick ride. Good for beginners, but still fun for more experienced riders, especially if you've done a big ride the day before or plan to ride the next day. I'd recommend starting at the top and riding it as an out-and-back.
Thank |Great rolling out and back route. Perfect singletrack route in a great mountain biking town.
Thank |I can only recall one quick, steepish climb, the rest was rolling, meandering trail through aspens and pine forest. Gorgeous ride.
Rode this one on 7/16 after riding the S. Fooses trail in outside of Salida. Was fun, had some good climbs and a nice quick downhill reward afterwards. Good trail very close to Mt CB.
