From the parking area head up the road and follow this to a dirt road. After 5 or so miles on the dirt road it will crest, from here take a right and travel up this road for 500 yards or so. Look off to your right, the tail is marked. Take this single track all the way down passing the north trail across a creek and to a parking lot. From this parking area ride the road back to the car.
Son of Middle is an Intermediate to Expert trail and Beginner Riders will find this trail extremely difficult. Ride Red Sandstone Road 3 miles until the first fork and bear right. The trail head is less than a quarter mile ahead on the right and is clearly marked with a wooden trail sign.
Ride Son of Middle and 3-4 miles and loop back to your car easily by taking the right turn onto the North Trail to end up back on Red Sandstone Road. Or continue on Son of Middle (left) which drops you at the Spraddle Creek Trailhead just over 1 mile east of Red Sandstone Road. Simply head west on the Frontage road bike path to return to your car.
I didnt like this trail, from the reviews read I thought it would have some downhill, this track goes up and up and up and really doesnt have much downhill that you can rip through, the switchbacks suck and come up on you quickly, so be careful. I would much rather ride Meadow Mountain anyday
Thank |This is a nice trail to do shuttle runs on if you've got a few buddies with you. From the top trailhead on Red Sandstone Rd there is probably a couple hundred feet of climbing before your descent starts. Not TOO technical of a downhill but it is definitely not for beginners due to the narrowness of the trail. I didn't try it uphill but it seems like a cool climb that could be a nice out-and-back from the lower trailhead. There is one point on the trail that gives you a view of Vail Mtn which is cool.
Thank |Great trail! The uphill on FS 700 is easy...i do want to point out that the trail junction mentioned where you turn right just before the official trailhead does not have the number for the other trail marked. You will see a sign that mentions the Lost Lake Trail and Road, it will also say to go straight to go to Piney. This is the intersection where you turn right. The Singletrack will be just a few peddles up the hill!
Overall a great trail! It rolls up and down until you reach the T section where you can go left or right. I chose to go left and loved it. Fun rocky sections to maneuver, and a couple of good spots to let it roll!
Thank |And, if you really like pain, do it on a single speed. Red Sandstone will tire you, and a couple of hills on the single track will have you in the walking gear. Trail is closed until mid June.
Thank |Turn right (in lieu of left for Son of Middle Creek) at the one trail intersection for a smooth and fast descent down the North Trail.
Thank |Lots of fun, great trail for a quick, fast ride with a nice downhill.
Thank |Son of Middle Creek is a classic Vail ride that has some fun creek crossings, great views, good climbs, and some fun downhill.
