Mountain Biking South Canon Trails

*****   Add a review
#75 of 1,392 mountain bike trails in Colorado
#557 in the world

The South Canon Trails is a network of singletrack, some brand-new and purpose built, others old social trails, that connect from the edge of Canon City all the way up to the Section 13 trails. This network generally stays very dry and rideable almost all year long.

The trails down low right out of town are very mellow, flowy, and perfect for beginners! However, if you want to connect all the way up to Section 13, you'll have to use the Hard Time trail, which really is a Hard Time--in a good way! Some super technical sections in here, some that are unrideable either way due to the rocky knife edge that it crosses. But generally, some hike a bike on the way up, ripping good times on the way back down!

Once up Hard Time there are three different trails that connect to Temple Canyon road, each with a different flavor. Check the map, there's one obvious trail that takes you to Section 13, which then allows you to ride those loops before returning.

All in all, this is an incredible addition to the Canon City trail network!

Great variety and very entertaining. Each trail feels unique. There is super fun flow down low on trails like Mutton Bustin' and Schepp's Ridge and also super fun tech on Upper and Lower Hard Time. The Great Escape is a nice mix. It seems the trails throw one little feature and challenge after another at you. Also beautiful scenery in the upper sections. Of course these trails are likely best ridden by most as a shuttle, but If you don't mind some hike-a-bike sections, then these trails make for rigorous and technically challenging climbs. Also, the trails are well-marked throughout. Well done LAMBA and Canon City.

Great shuttle ride if you have someone to drive you up Temple Canyon Road and drop you off at the Great Escape trailhead. From there you can a number of trail combinations all the way down to Eagle Wing trailhead, or do what I do which is have my ride pick me up at Cup and Cone (about one mile ride into town).

Great variation to be had here. Some really flowy runs like Muttin Bustin or some technical sections like Hard Time. Lots of fun to be had and not crowded.

The area could be divided into two areas: upper and lower. The lower part is mostly beginner-friendly desert singletrack. The upper trails get steep, rocky, and there are numerous spots with high consequence. The good spots are truly outstanding. Unfortunately, non of the trail segments make for a really good climb, but they do make for excellent downhills. Be prepared for tricky rocks and exposure. The scenery is excellent throughout the upper portions. I'd give the area a full five stars if there was a better option for making a loop.
