Mountain Biking Sugar Hill Loop

***   Add a review
#193 of 300 mountain bike trails in Virginia
#7,744 in the world

Intermediate loop trail designed by outdoor center owner for optimum experience. Trail follows scenic Clinch River for one mile then leads to the ruins of an old 1787 French Settlement, then up and down very curvy, wooded descent. This trail is part of a newly designated combination backroad/trail system which courses 125 miles through beautiful forest, farm, river and mining country in an uncrowded environment. The trail is marked with numbered stations and self-guided by an informational brochure that highlights the local geological and pioneer history and identifies several species of trees.

We started on Blue Bell Island and rode thru St. Paul and up Sugar Hill. We will be skipping Blue Bell Island next time because it had been flooded and was mostly sand and downed trees and driftwood. The pedal thru the St. Paul section of the trail was city streets and the trail didn't get fun until we reached Oxbow Lake. Sugar Hill was a taxing climb to say the least but when you reach the top the view and decent are worth it. The decent is on a skinny trail on the side of the hill but the terrain is easy. I really enjoyed this part of the ride. A decent trail overall.

Main trail is graveled doubletrack. The creek trail is singletrack. rode there yesterday (2/14/08 my first time there) and the main trail has been recently graveled and was like pedaling through deep sand which made the climbs exhausting. i jumped off the main trail for the return to the trailhead and rode it enough to realize that it would be a pretty good ride when its not muddy (the bike gained an extra few pounds of mud). i'll report again next time i go this summer. i gave this trail a medium ranking due to the steep climbs.

This trail would not be a bad ride to get into shape. If you live close to this trail then check it out. It is shared with walkers but overall you will probably not see to many on the biking part. It starts with a mile of flats but once you make the right turn prepare to be pedaling up a hill for a couple miles. The climb is a gravel road and not very fun. The backside has some good switchbacks and is a lot of fun. It rained when I went and I want to go back and check it out in the summer when it is dry.
