Mountain Biking Sugar Loaf Loop
#44 of 319 mountain bike trails in Idaho
Start out by heading across the road and catch the trailhead west. The singletrack quickly turns toward the south. Follow the trail south and follow the "lower sugar loaf" signs to the top. Once on top, enjoy the view of the Magic Valley below before continuing on to the south. The trail spits you out on a dirt road. Follow the road about 300m and cross the main dirt road to pick up the trail again. Follow the "Hot Shot" trail to the bottom of the canyon and catch the "Dry Gulch" trail back down toward the parking area. (This section is VERY fast). From the bottom of Dry Gulch catch the trail to the west over the hill and back to the parking area.

From Kimberly Idaho head straight south through town. Approximately 5 miles from town there will be a dirt road called "Indian Springs road". Drive on the road about 300m to the parking area. This trail can be ridden starting out west or east of the parking area. Trail map of the area can be found at this link: https://www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?t=h&oe=UTF8&msa=0&ie=UTF8&mid=1Mvt75MFnxIcYZG4ehB5Fhh4Twys
There's actually over 30 miles of singletrack here with fantastic variety and a number of great loop options. Most trail segments go mostly up or down with a couple of traverse sections thrown in. For each possible loop, you have your choice of a long gradual climb and a steeper, rockier descent, or a chunky, technical climb and a long flowy descent. Either way, it's gonna' be tons o' fun. It is possible to construct entire beginner loops by combining the easier singletrack with the dirt roads that cross the area. But ripping the rocky trail segments will be a hoot for advanced riders. This is truly a trail system where any level of rider could have a great time.
This is mostly dry sagebrush land, but the Dry Gulch trail runs next to a creek with plenty of creek crossings, which will carry water in the spring but dry out later in the year.
The only drawback for this system is the quantity of cattle.... and the piles they leave behind on the trail. Much of the trail is more .... aromatic.... than one would like.
Thank |I rode this loop on three different occasions while visiting family in the Magic Valley area--each ride was more enjoyable than the last! This trail includes beautiful flowing singletrack, several interesting rock gardens, and plenty of climbing (hard on this middle-aged Georgia boy!), A perfect beginner/intermediate trail, in my opinion.
Thank |This is a great area to ride. The described ride is part of a larger trail system that has 40 miles of established trails and many more miles of doubletrack, gravel roads and singletrack. You could easily spend a couple of days exploring these trails. Bike shops in Twin Falls have further info.
