Mountain Biking The Zipper
#6 of 119 mountain bike trails in Nevada
From the parking spot at the base, ride up for 2 miles. By doing this, you'll get an idea of how the trails flows. The bottom half isn't too bad, the banks could be taller and there are a few bad rocks, but the second half is steep. It drops 500 ft in 1 mile and is filled with switchbacks that are barely wider than your bike. At the top, you'll see a giant sign and the Spanish Springs Canyon Singletrack Loop. If you go left from the sign, it is made from rocks. Literally the trail is made of rocks. We stopped about 1 mile out and turned around. To the right it is smoother, but we haven't ridden far enough to really know. Anyways, going down the zipper is where it really gets fun. You can make it all the way down to the bottom in less than 10 minutes, but just be careful with the switchbacks and the steep parts.

On I-80 headed whatever direction get off at sparks blvd. headed north. Follow it a long ways out until you get to the Spanish Springs windmill. Then keep following it. Go past the starcrest sign and on your next right you should see a big park being built. Follow the BLM signs all the way to the back of the park. Follow the dirt road for around 1/2 a mile and you should see the singletrack.

a cool trail alot of cool hard up hills. decent is fast and fun very rocky. I wont do it again due to all the target shooters shooting. kinda didnt feel safe. what a shame.
Thank |Great ride and a good workout with all the climbing.
Thank |Trail is rough but doable. I am a novice and I was able to do but I do have a motocross background. I live about 5 min away and decided this would be a trail I could help improve from a 3 star. I plan on contacting whoever to help get the trail improved. would be nice to have some more single track closer to home. Not a bad ride but not a good ride.
Thank |This trail is close to my house but I've only rode it once. It is not flowey or that fun. It could be a good training ride and good for learning switchbacks but that's about it.
Thank |We started this trail by the softball park. By the time we hit the bottom of the mountain I absolutely hated this trail and could not see how anybody would give it a high rating; I'm a downhill guy. Once we began to make our decent it all made sense. Even went back up the next day.
Thank |Really great top half. Many switchbacks and rocks to make the trail fun.
Thank |I Ride the zipper twice a week , never gets boring . There are two ways to ride it . From the starting point you can head straight up and straight down . Or if you have the time keep heading up the fire road stay right , then right again once you hit the ridge , follow the ridge and eventually you will end up on top of the zipper. The ridge is very rocky and will shake you up but views are tremendous . Watch out for shooters in the area , be alert always a wanna be cowboy shooting soda cans . * Review edited 6/23/2012
Thank |Need to correct the directions above. Head north on Vista Blvd, not Sparks Blvd. Head all the way to Golden Eagle Regional Park. Head back to the interpretive trail where you can park. Start out on the trail towards your right and then right on a dirt trail that borders the BLM fence. When you hit the dirt road head left for about a 1/4 mile. When the road dips into a small wash, the trail should be on your right. It's a tough climb, but worth it for the views and the loop ride.
Thank |This is a great trail and is improving all the time. Several people are working on getting this trail approved by the BLM, which will allow trail improvements to be made. When you reach the top of the zipper, head right. Take the second fork to your left heading up a small canyon. When you hit the road, head right for about 50 yards then right again on the single track. This will take you up to Piute Pipeline road. Cross the road and continue on the single track to the top of the ridge. You'll cross Paiute Pipeline road again and head along the ridge back to the top of the zipper. The ridge section is very rocky and technical, but fun.
Thank |Fun, but challenging for an intermediate. Lots of steep climbs and the swithbacks are tight. Great workout and the ride down is awesome!
Thank |Trail rework.
A fall-line section of the trail was rerouted. Still under construction, but much easier and safer to get up and down.
