Mountain Biking Theodore Wirth Park

****   Add a review
#7 of 138 mountain bike trails in Minnesota
#423 in the world

This trail has just officially been approved by the Minneapolis Park Board at and official activity. This means, mountain biking is treated just like baseball, soccer, and other similar activities.....so this is totally killer. The trail itself is a very good flowing singletrack. It's considered an intermediate trail with a few more advanced features here and there, with bypasses. In 2006, we plan to build an expert section and a few more miles of singletrack. This trail is about 5 minutes out of downtown Minneapolis and is in a very nicely wooded area. When you are riding there, you would never guess you are in a big urban area.....that's pretty darn cool if you ask me.

Getting there
Hwy 55 and Theodore Wirth Parkway. From Hwy 100, go East on 55 to Theodore Wirth Parkway. From Int 94 go West on 55 to Theodore Wirth Parkway. Trail entrance is on the North West corner with a Kiosk and map. You can't park there, so you must go South on Theodore Wirth Parkway until you get to Glennwood. Take a Left (East) on Glennwood and you will see a lake and parking lot to your left. Park there and follow the way you came back to the trail head. There are paved bicycle trails along Theodore Wirth Parkway on the west side, so you can take those back to the entrance and kiosk at 55 and Theodore Wirth Parkway.

My first time there. I didn't even get to crack all the different trails. There was also an official race, so I couldn't hit that trail either. I look forward to spending some more time there. I saw some technical obstacles on the few trails I was on, so I look forward to tackling those too! Seems to have well groomed and maintained trails.

Very fun, has a very nice trailhead and readable signs on the trail. Around this time of year it is very chattery or eroded in some places but overall a very fun trail

Lots of twists and turns with a few rock features. The ground is more on the sandy side and is well maintained overall.

Not a bad spot to meet up with some pals for a quick ride after work or early in the morning. Nothing too technical on three main loops. Can't wait to try the fat bike out here this winter.

Wow. That is advanced! Fun and very challenging trail. Wasn't able to ride it all. Some segments are a little over my pay-grade. If you have a dropper post it'll come in handy here. Main loop trail is very ridable and the tough stuff is on separate segments that you can choose to ride or not. Great spot to challenge your skills.

Had a great time on the trail. Marked well and in super shape.
The only problem we encountered was with the directions on this app. They took us to an incorrect destination, but close. Be aware.

Some of the best trails I've ridden inside a major city! The northern loop is tight and technical, the southern loops are fast and flowy with great banked turns, small jumps, rollers, and fun downhills.

Rode the newish "flow" trail on the south side of the park (Glenwood Section). Very fun with snow on the ground and I saw half a dozen fat bikers on the short loop during my ride. So cool to have this place close to the city and connected with greenways.

Theo is a great set of 4 trails now. The north section (2 set of trails) is a very tight, twisting single track with some fun technical features that even a newbie can learn on. I think it is one of the more fun trails I've ridden. The newer sections, glenwood spur and the southwest section are much more open and up and down. A lot more flow and less technical. Great for burning the legs. These are great trails and MORC does an excellent job of maintaining them.

Short and to the point...Right in the city, and easy to get to. Some people aren't fans of this trail, but I love it. Its fun to hit it fast, great training. Gets you used to hitting tight switchbacks, forces you to become comfortable with tight tree runs. Also the two Double Black sections are quick, and great levels to increase your skill level.

Nice flowy trail. Maintained on the highest level. It's a short ride but very interesting for both beginners and more skilled riders

This is a great set of trails right at the edge of Minneapolis. It's close enough to downtown that I can sneak in a quick lunch hour lap or two or be on the singletrack within a few minutes of leaving the office at the end of the day. There are about 4.5 miles of tight, twisty flowing intermediate trail here with some rock gardens and other one-hit obstacles mixed in. Mostly level but not flat, you can really fly on these trails. There are two parts: 3 miles of north section and 1 mile or so of south section, connected by two minutes of paved bike trail along Wirth Parkway. There's a recently built optional section off the north loop with skinnies, boulders and other spicyness. It's all flowy and great, and you can knock out several laps during a visit. Go ride it!

I suppose for the city property this is pretty sweet due to location. Not a lot of real estate involved in this single track, it winds back and forth up and down maybe two hills. When I was there the final little stretch was closed. Not sure about the 4 mile distance stated, did not seem very long. I believe it does have some advanced riding along with a good deal of rocks and roots but this track is short, you could ride it several times I suppose.

I was traveling for work and I didn't have my bike with me. So, I ran part of the trails here and loved it! Wish I had my bike so I could have seen more of the park. First time in MN and can't wait to come back, will definitely revisit these trails.

Theo Wirth has some excellent riding right near the metro area of the twin cities. 2 distinct one-way loops with a paved bike path in between. The loops are some excellent singletrack, and you totally forget that you're so close to such a large metropolitan area. You won't find massive climbs, but it is a very flowy, very fun trail. Largely an intermediate trail with some small obstacles.

The course is currently undergoing expansion, adding about another mile before the end of the summer. If I wasn't so busy, I'd be there every night.

I like this trail because it is somewhat hidden from the city, and is a fun loop to ride over and over and over. Watch out for nudists, though! I've had some disturbing rides at the worth.
