Mountain Biking Tsetsee Gun East Trail
#14 of 70 mountain bike trails in Mongolia
The trail is ridden as a out and back and starts as a two track dirt road. Most of this road runs in the open along the edge of the forest and a small stream. This actually makes for a nice warm up before the real climbing begins.
At about 3.5 km the road/trail enters the forest in earnest and becomes ST. From here, it is slow going for another 5.5km to the reach the top of the mountain which is Tsetsee Gun. It is a technical climb and quite steep in many places. It is not for the weary or faint hearted. BUT the return ride is all DH and a hoot blasting through all the gnar as fast you dare. Once you break out of the forest and you're on the two track again, it is a 3.5km DH sprint back to your car.
On top the trail can be linked up Manjusri-Tsetsee Gun Trail, heading south towards Zuunmod for a point to point shuttle or a longer out and back.

From the east gate of Ulaanbaatar (Bayanzurikh Tovchoo), travel east on the main road about 11km to the little village of Khonkhor on the right side of the road. Turn right and drive through Khonkhor towards the mountain. From the southern edge of Khonkhor, drive up the valley (south and then west) 6km until the dirt road dead ends at two camps. Park your vehicle here. The trail is behind the first camp. You have to go around the camp (fence) to get to the trail. It starts as a two track dirt road and after about 3.5km it becomes ST.
Rode the trail today with four friends. Still quite a bit of snowpack and loads of FUN. Wow, what a great out and back trail. Great work out going up with good technical bits. Some hike-a-bike, but a lot of it is rideable. Just pace yourself and takes some breaks. It is a long uphill -- 6 miles or so including the dirt road at the bottom. Then the payoff is huge coming back down. Soooo much fun. Good rocky rooty tech and good speed both. Plus, it's all very rideable in the snow because enough people hike the trail to pack it well. Also very beautiful mountain forests and great views on top.
Thank |This is a trail of four tales. In the beginning the first few km on the two track are fairly easy going. It's not technical and not very steep for the most part. It makes for a nice warm up and nice time enjoying the scenery and chatting with one another.
The second tale begins as you enter the forest and get on the ST. The trail soon steepens and hits you with A LOT of gnar. It makes for a tough climb to the top with quite a bit of hike-a-bike. At the top though you have made your payment in full and have earned your reward.
The third tale is when the story gets good really good. From the top, it is one crazy fun descent back down the mountain the way you came, constantly blowing through tech and gnar.
The fourth and final tale begins as you exit the forest and get on the two track again. This finale becomes a 3.5 km high speed DH chase back to the car. The last one back buys.
