Mountain Biking Waikato River Trails: 2 Arapuni
#58 of 171 mountain bike trails in North Island
Looking at it from north to south, the first few kilometers from Arapuni to Jones Landing are techincal but less confident riders can take a road detour.
From Jones Landing to Waotu Road you have to go by road but the remaining 20km is remote and follows forestry roads through pine trees or narrow trails through native bush. There is a spectacular 80 metre long swing bridge to cross and lots of steps to walk down. The views of Lake Arapuni are stunning and there are opportunities to swim in it as you get close to Waipapa Dam.

Normally, you'll be joining this section of the Waikato River Trails from the Karapiro or Waipapa sections. You can also access it by car at Arapuni village at the north end or from the Waipapa Dam at the south end.
I rode it from south to north - from the Waipapa Dam to Arapuni.
The southern section from Waipapa dam is fantastic - beautiful trail through native forest and it's real close to the lake in places. You have to walk up the steps to the top of a cliff. After some more native bush you go through lots of pine forest then after the swing bridge it's a 200m climb to Waotu Road. It's mainly down hill to Jones Landing and then there is some quite nice single track to Arapuni village and a coffee.
Great ride!!
