The Wainuiomata mountain bike park has a lot of unrealised potential and just 12km of trail...
At the car park you'll find a good map of the trails. Take Jungle Scout and Jungle Gym to the top of the hill. They are really nice. Pick up Labyrinth and while you're up there try Freewheel. You could come down Snail Trail, or if you're an advanced rider, Spoonhill. The latter is a rutted, steep and bendy trail that offers a challenge rather than fun. The wetlands loop is a good one for a parent and the kids.

This is an excellent track of its type - the gradient is so well controlled that you won't notice the 450 metres of vertical ascent. And you won't shave any layers off your brake pads if you go down it! It's wide, smooth, and easy.
Thank |A growing network of trails for all ages and abilities. Best entry level trails in Wellington making great use of the (rare for Wellington) flattish terrain.
Thank |As mountain bike parks go Wainuiomata doesn't rate in the top echelon but there is fun to be had there. There are some nice easy trails and a skills area near the car park at the bottom. Up on top of the range I liked Freewheel which is fast and flowing. One good thing is that a lot of the trials are under the bush canopy so are pleasant even in very windy conditions...
