Mountain Biking Wannamaker Park

#30 of 115 mountain bike trails in South Carolina
#2,049 in the world

This trail has JUST opened (still has that ***SNIFF***... Mmmmmmm, new trail smell). When you pedal out of the parking area just past the gate (and the pole with a slot in it for the $1 day use fee) there are signs indicating which direction to ride. This is based on the day of the week.

As I said, this trail is "new" and the guys who worked on it have done a EXCELLENT job of putting together a great trail. Once it's been used it's gonna be REALLY fun. If you're looking for a fast, smooth trail, then you'll have to participate by riding it with everyone
else. It will be, but just needs to be "broke in". It will certainly be that way once the trail has been used. There are many berms, jumps and even a "cork screw" bermed corner that winds totally under (or over) itself with a bridge called the "toilet bowl". This is on a section called "the ridge" which is a somewhat technically challenging area. There's a bypass for beginners.

The "official" opening for the trial is scheduled for around June 1, 2012. RIDE IT NOW!!!

Great addition to the one good trail we have here in the Low Country.

Getting there
Trail head is NOT located in the Wannamaker County Park. To get to trail head, go into Goose Creek and travel down St. James Ave. Turn onto West View Blvd. (toward Crowfield Plantation Subdivision). Right before West View Blvd. turns towards the right into the neighborhood, there will be a dirt road that runs parallel to West View Blvd. You will find the trail head down to the left.

One of my least favorite places to ride a bike unfortunately. I’ve ridden here a few times over thanksgiving and Xmas visits and it’s just not very fun. Aside from the agonizing twisty/turny nature of these trails you’ll also be treated to a massive helping of roots which will all but guarantee a slow go, especially out on the orange loop. The trail can also be impossible to spot if there’s enough leaf coverage, which there has been when I’ve ridden. I’m fine getting lost when I’m out in the middle of the wilderness, but I’d prefer better markings and an easier trail to follow when I’m at a suburban park with a pay box at the trail head.

This is one of the best places in the Charleston area. Most of the trails are flat, windy, and full of roots. There is a fun pump track out front, and the best trail is probably "The Ridge", which is a fun flowy trail next to a creek. There is also a $1 fee out front. It's a very fun place, just be prepared for a lot of roots on the trails.

It's a nice intermediate park for a day ride and is about a medium difficulty. Most trails are flat, windy, and full of roots. There is a fun little Pump track out front that is fun to ride on. Probably the best trail for biking is called "The Ridge" and is a fun flowy trail next to a creek. Most of the other trails are pretty similar to one another, windy, and flat, but still fun. However this place seems to be wet a lot, especially towards the back of the park, so definitely make sure it hasn't rained recently. There is also a $1 fee at the front. It's a very fun park and definitely one of the best in the Charleston area, just be prepared for a lot of bumpy roots on the trails!

The trail was very disappointing. I rode each route but the only difference I could tell from the technical orange course and the easy yellow course is the trail was a little more narrow. The course is flat with so many roots that you cannot get any speed. I think it is the first track I have ever ridden that I didn't smile at least once. Nothing is technical and nothing is fun. I gave it a 1.5 because whoever is doing the upkeep is doing a good job. I should have known something was up when I rode it on a saturday for several hours and there was not one other biker. It just isn't a fun trail.

Great place. Good trails for beginner to median expirence riders. Or for and old rider, like me, getting back into MTB riding. I definitely will be using this trail system a couple times a month.

Great place! Great mountain biking as the trails are filled with roots and can get technical. A fun area of the park for biking is called "The Ridge"- definitely our favorite. There is a one dollar donation at the trailhead as well.

Really great trails for beginners and intermediate riders with the yellow, blue, red, or green trails.

Red trail has a great little ridge setup that will get people excited and tempted by the challenge. Blue and red Trails are great and do have some elevation changes. Haven't done the technical course due to my level of inexperience but if it's quality is as good as the other trails it should be extremely nice!

Please do visit the trail! It's worth the dollar for sure!

A relatively easy trail with very little elevation gain. I did the red/blue and red/green loops and finished with a run around the short easy yellow loop. Was planning on going back to do the orange technical but will have to wait for another visit, this one is getting cut short. So i had an overall elevation change of 101 feet and the full trail with the yellow trail was 8.5 miles. The trail map says the red loop is 8 miles but it came up under 7 miles on MMR and strava tracking for me and I actually ran a little part twice when I made a wrong turn. The distance is still a decent ride and if I'd felt like adding on another 5 miles, I could have done the technical orange portion but i was saving it for another day. I'd take a new trail rider here and run the red trail, let them skip the ridge portion if they were not comfortable and the rest would be flat with lots of turns they can run at their own pace. Trail goes one way switching by the day and is very well signed. It was in good shape today but has a lot of leaf and twig debris, likely from the big storms recently...Hurricane anyone, but it's very dry now? The marked easy yellow loop was the deffinitely the oldest trail, roots were exposed and the trail surface was well worn and hard. Very bumpy with little bumps over roots and the hard surface bounced the bike along even with my full suspension. The few bridges put in for fun that might be a challenge for a newer rider had go arounds but were fun for those that can use them. There was only 1 or two obstacles that were over 8 inches and they were man made with routes around.

The blue/green side was very challenging, lots of roots and constant pedaling. Really fun and good trail.
The Red/Green side was SUPER dope... came close a few time of wiping out. Lots of bumps and cut turns. Loved it!

The did a great job with the layout of this trail. This trail is a place I would come to work on fundamentals. You will not get a lot of speed because there are turn every 30 feet is seemed. There are a lot of off camber turns, turn with trees, turns with roots. and turns on hills. Be prepared for a work out. There is absolutely no elevation so you will be pedaling you entire time out here. It is still a fun place to visit.

Decided to make a trip to Charleston and while I was there I rode Wannamaker. They have done a lot of work to the trail since the last time I was there. There is a new trail (Orange) and it adds about 4 miles to the 8 miles above for a total or 12 miles. They have added the directional hub since I was last there and that seems to give the trail a new look. Overall I had a ton of fun here and would go back when I am in the area.

Not for the weary or beginners. Tight, windy trails and tons of roots.

Ignore my last review. I was at Wannamaker County park in North Charleston. Definitely a different place. Look for the north trail trailhead. Nice parking lot. Good trails. Creative for the space that it's in. If it's been raining give it a few days to dry up. Some of the sections of trail hold water really well. Not a ton of elevation change but a cool ridge section along a creek.

Nice trail system for a hike to enjoy some greenery. Maybe even introduce a first time mountain biker or your kids to the sport. But hardly intermediate. Can have some roots here and there but a hardtail will do just fine. Negligible elevation change.

Very fun trail in goose creek, SC. It's pretty rooty, so having a FS is definitley needed. I would recommend going in the evening time during the summer. It gets very hot and sticky in the low country. The north trail has 4 different trails to ride all ranging from beginner to advanced riders. The red trail is my favorite because of the ridge section. I had to take it a little slow the first time to get the gist of it. The second time through was a lot of fun and fast! After an hour and a half of riding in 104 degrees, I decided to find and ride the orange route in the back of the trail. Probably not the best idea as I was already exhausted. Still, I made it through (barely). The orange trail is mostly flat with a couple of intermittent jumps. It's also full of Mosquitos and horseflies. So make sure you bring some "Off" bug spray. All in all, very fun trail and a great workout that'll keep you alert.
P.s. I recommend buying some bike shorts/underwear with good padding so your "junk" doesn't get beat up. Just sayin...

Being a beginner rider, I remember the tree roots beating me up on my 26" hardtail. Might be a better ride on a FS. Other than the roots, It's a good trail for beginners. I would have to say I prefer Marrington over Wannamaker in the Charleston Area.

Do not rely on GPS distance-wise on such twisty trail under thick foliage. Measure it with nicely calibrated bike computer and you'll get all 8 miles

At a first glance there's nothing special in this flat trail but there's something that made me ride two loops and cut it short due to tight schedule.
Beginner to intermediate trail that require constant pedaling in order to have fun. It's a first trail I rode on 32x12 almost exclusively. Roots, berms and small jumps will keep you entertained. Ridge section is fun and could be accessed from a shortcut. Haven't met anybody on Friday afternoon.
$1 fee required to use these trails which isn't bad. Trail is directional depends on the day of the week.
I wouldn't include this place into my road trip but if passing by recommend to check it out
