Mountain Biking Wells State Park
#44 of 223 mountain bike trails in Massachusetts
Wells offers a variety of smooth, classic New England singletrack scattering all across the park, with around 800 feet of varying elevation gain. This is an excellent spot for people getting into mountain biking, though the actual mountain biking loop can be a bit disheartening to beginners. The power lines located past Mill Pond Road provide smooth trail, rolling hills, and access to singletrack that leads off the park grounds, but have no small amount of great riding. Scenery isn't so bad, either!

Take the Mass Pike to Route 20/Sturbridge. Head EAST on Route 20 until you can take a left onto Route 49/Spencer. Take 49 about a mile up - the entrance to the park is on your left off the road. Follow the main road straight into the parking lot.

Singletrack trail off mill pond trail is a great ride somewhat technical in spots not to much ice lots of fun
Thank |Just got into the sport and found this gem less than 10 miles from me.Trails well marked. Definately recommend for riders with some experience. Trails include: technical rock gardens, some steep downhill drop-ins, Smooth long downhills, water crossings, and technical climbs.
Thank |Did the main bike trail & another smaller loop both directions this weekend. Trail is challenging, boney in a number of sections, some climbing (which makes for some nice downhills), but a blast for those with some experience! Trails are well marked.
Thank |Well certainly a nice place to ride.. lots of little hilly sections with some decent technical mixed in for fun..
Thank |For a short few hours ride this place is great. Only found one nice 5-6ft drop. The rest is rocky and rooty, all the good stuff. Grab a map from the parking lot. Its real simple to find your way. The Mtn Bike trial is clearly marked with green. To extend your ride it offers access to the power line trails which can be ridden forever in both directions.
Thank |Parking costs $2. Not a lot of miles here. The bike loop provided for some rocky climbing, enough rock and roots to keep you paying attention throughout, and eventually gave way to some fast smooth descents. Other trails are fast and wide open. Throughout there are some fun downhill opportunities. Not a bad ride if you are close by.
Thank |Had a good time here in April '11, like most trails in April there were a few wet spots. I hit it up a lot since its a couple miles from my office
Thank |It's funny how opinions change over time... reading my below review, I'd just say I was a wuss who didn't know how to deal with technical trails! I had a blast riding the mountain bike loop (5 miles) through the rocks, climbs, and roots, though it can be a bit swampy in a few places. This is good techincal New England riding that eventually pans out to some smoother wooded singletrack. Scratch the below - give Wells a try!
Thank |Edited this on 9/24 due to it being a lame review. * Review edited 9/24/2008
Thank |This is some very nice, very under-rated terrain that provides ample opportunity for all skill levels. Watch out for cars and people moving through the park, but once you're in the woods by the power lines, open up and ride the dirt!
