Mountain Biking Winchester Trails

****   Add a review
#82 of 307 mountain bike trails in Oregon
#3,929 in the world

This is a network of trails used by both MTBrs and motorized vehicles. A map (and fantastic service!) can be obtained from Moe's Bike Shop in North Bend. The trails are typical coastal riding with lots of roots and several rolling hills, which sometimes can be quite a "technical challenge". The trails themselves are not that flowy, but many of them are extremely well groomed during the riding season of summer and fall. Winter is just plain wet. Spring can be too. There are several lollipop or loop routes that can be done, and due excellent trail intersection markings, when a map is used distances and difficulty can be adjusted according to your fitness level and ability. Although I marked this as a doubletrack, much of it is singletrack and connector sections are often gravel fireroad.

Enjoyed the technical root-infested singletrack trails. Only (big) concern was lack of trail signs. It can be easy to get turned around as this forest is quite dense. Long up/down gravel road leading to/from trails are quite a workout (atleast we were surrounded by fantastic smells, wind and trees). Worthy challenge!

Well maintained. Easy to follow signs off gravel road to trails.

Great time today. I was pleasantly surprised at the quality and maintenance done on the trails. I only had time to explore Skyline and 8 ball. Anxious to go back and ride more. I only met a few cars on the gravel road and saw/heard no atvs. Trails were easy to find off the gravel road.

Just rode this for the first time while camping with family down at Bullards Beach SP just 8 miles down the road. Spent about 2hrs exploring most all the trails. A little confusing at first and pic of map on phone was required many times to negotiate since i rode as many sections as i could to get a feel for the place. Initial impresion was they are pretty much just moto and atv trails that are open to bikes as well. The trails in logged sections weren't that great and had to pedal a lot of loose gravel fireroad to get to many of the trail sections. With that said, there were some fun trail sections with tons of fun, challenging roots (8-Ball) and a few good, steep pitched sections to romp thru too. Even though there seemed to always be sounds of gun fire in the near distance, i felt like i had the forest and trails to myself which was kind of cool, minus fresh bear dung of course. Gets kind of a lower rating from me cause i only found about 1/3 of the ride and trails at most to be kind of worthwhile out of about a dozen sections. I did appreciate the solitude while being right off of hwy 101 and some nice little patches of dense forest with some fun, yet challenging root sections to keep me engaged. Might ride again if down in area only, but not until i ride the Blue Ridge trails about 15 miles NE if there on our next annual family camping trip down that way.

First let me say that I was very impressed with these trails. The area seems to be in a constant state of flux with logging and whatnot; some trails are sometimes closed and many are not clearly marked and I'll be honest I got a bit lost my first time as the maps I had didn't exactly match up with some of the roads out there. Despite that, the trails themselves, at least the ones I have tried so far (and there are still many that I haven't), are great. There are a lot of roots, which make the descents very technical at times, which I love. Those roots can be a bit of a problem on the climbs unfortunately, but I can live with that for some interesting downhill. The trails seem to be well maintained and hopefully they get some new signs back up and some updated maps for the future. I will be going back for more.

This was the first set of trails I ever officially biked off road. I have a soft spot for this place and it has improved dramatically over the years. I returned today while visiting family and had my first trail reunion in about six years. The trails are in great shape and were clear of any major debris. Many sections that have been torn up in the past by motorized dirt cycles have been reinforced with concrete and drainage has been improved. However, there are still plenty of cycle ruts that can cause problems. This place rocks though, and although there aren't any spectacular elevation changes during the ride, this rooty Coos County Forest always seems to leave me bushed. Have fun!
