Mountain Biking Yankee Springs

****   Add a review
#15 of 322 mountain bike trails in Michigan
#750 in the world

The trail is fun for intermediate to advanced riders. Beginners can ride it as well but they will have to go slow. The trail has lots of variety with some smooth sections and gradual hills, and some very rocky/rooty sections and steep hills. You can ride the trail many times in a row due to the plentiful line choices. Beware of the sand though because there are many sandy sections which can cause crashes if you aren't ready.

Would give it a 5 but as everyone else has stated, sand. Does create a little more difficulty but the trail is fun. Rotating different directions is good for keeping the trail in better conditions. Several small steep climbs that includes rocks, roots, and loose stone and some gradual longer climbs. I always find that there's two big hills to worry about and the rest is history. As always I love the down hills with speed. Plus you get to bike around the devil's soup bowl!

First time ever on this trail (or any trail like it). I was very impressed, great shape, tough ride for a beginner, but I enjoyed it. Some decent climbs and fun descents. Can't wait to go back! (Rode the main trail 4.14.18)

Just went on a 50 degree day in January. Surprisingly good conditions; I'd say about 1/3 snow/icy slush, 1/3 wet dirt but not quite mud, and 1/3 dry. Super fun time and a great workout.

This was a favorite when I lived in Grand Rapids. It was a bit of a drive, but a great place to get away for a while. Great views every now and then, and overall a fun trail.

Very well taken care of trail system. Fast and flowy with some short climbing areas. The only reason I didn't give it a 5 star rating is that it would be nice if they had some drop, jump or tech options. Plenty of places for it. Overall a solid trail. Well marked too!

I'm surprised this trail isn't ranked higher on the Michigan list, but maybe I'm biased since this is my home track. There are some good climbs that challenge me, and fun downhills are the payoff. The length makes a great workout, and there are several short cuts and bail out options for flexibility. The direction alternates by day, which I love for the added variety... almost like another trail. The trail gets a good deal of traffic and is well maintained, but I usually only see a handful of riders over the full ride. There is a good campground (not sure about hookup, tent camping for me) which is popular in the summer, so plan accordingly.

Good fun trail, very greasy when wet in spots, but nothing unmanageable.
Beware down tree in blind corner shortly after "The Pines" sign.

Like others have said, this trail is best when wet due to the sandy areas. It's a long singletrack through mostly dense woods. Decent flow in some places. Some really steep short climbs/descents full of tree roots in other places. You will need a season pass to ride here. There is a booth at the trailhead where they will charge you. ($11 if I remember correctly)

Now riding reverse direction Tue, Thur, Sat. Reverse trail is more technical and some climbs are very steep. A step up in difficulty from the normal direction.

A smooth well kept trail with some sandy sections. Overall a fun trail to ride. I had no troubles navigating and the trails were well marked. Note: if your looking for a restroom it's not at the parking lot but down the main trail about 50 meters.

Rating a trail should never be about your own ride in a sense. This trail has a flow and challenge factor to it that forces you to make better descions. The sand isnt the problem really its you body position when traversing sandy areas. There are some very challenging sections and riden at a high level you can make it up most hills with speed but the should limit intermediate rider who are out of shape being tired and unprepared can get you hurt hear. Dont forget that. If your used to lets say pontiac lake this place in ways in more challenging because pontiac lake isnt sandy. But yankee makes up for it with well placed banks. Z

    SAND
this would probably be a fun trail if it's super wet, otherwise there is just an incredible amount of sand that makes it really hairy. kills momentum, makes it scary on the turns.

the trail is cool, but just be careful, it's a beast. my first bike is still out of commission from the TT on this trail

This is a nice MTB trail for West Michigan (5 stars for W Mich bit 3 stars on a national level). It is not technical except for a few roots and sand. I ride it regularly. It gets busy before the race in mid-April then traffic dies off for much of the rest of the year. There is a groomed fat bike trail in the winter.
