Earlier this month the US Library of Congress got their heads out of their asses and updated the subject “All Terrain Cycling” to “Mountain Biking” in their extensive catalog system. Perhaps they overhead ‘W’ talking about going out for a mountain bike ride one weekend and decided that had a better ring to it than an all terrain cycling ride 😉
As an interesting side note, the blog post linked in the paragraph above mentions that “mountain bike sales and participation are down” but the references mentioned actually paint a much different picture. Bicycle sales as a whole were down from 2005 to 2006 but from 2000 to 2006 sales have been all over the place (up one year, down the next). MTB participation, on the other hand, seems to be on the rise from what I can tell: the numbers show steady increases since 2000 and overall the numbers are up from 10 years ago. I predict when the 2007 numbers come in we’ll see further increases…
