Mountain Biking Alum Creek Phase I
#7 of 116 mountain bike trails in Ohio
Beginners can handle this trail, but it also has alot of technical aspects to build bike skills. Really good trail to enjoy your MTB, there is also a 2 mile beginner loop across the road from the entry. Good to warm up on or to teach a little one to ride.
Some neat obstacles and technical regions on this trail. Stays wet is the only downside ... please stay off when the rains have been around. This trail does not drain well.

From Columbus, go north on 71 and get off at the Polaris exit(121) and go right. Take Polaris parkway to Worthington Rd. Turn left. Go until you come to Africa Rd. Turn left. Keep going straight, through the 4 way stop(you'll see the damn on your left), and after the R/C air strip hang a right onto Lewis Center Rd (Lewis Center is a funky road). The trail head is up on your left. You will also see alot of MTB signs in the Alum Creek State Park area ... most of those signs lead to Phase I.

This is a fun trail system that is well marked and maintained. For the most part it flows very well with a few root area's. I would rate this as a beginner level trail
Thank |Being sort of new to trail riding, I ride this trail at minimum, once a week, usually more actually. For intermediate riders, it's great, well kept, always dries super quick. I love it! Short, but sweet! The skills section is great also for those who need some confidence building action lol
Thank |Not bad - similar in design to Phase II but gather water and retains it longer. Hit it this weekend the day after a great run at Phase II and it was just unenjoyable. I was battling leaves, wet roots and mud pits the whole time. When it's dry, though, it can be a blast!
Thank |I moved from John Bryan to Phase 1 on the same day and it was my third day on a MTB. It was fun but definitely made me a bit nervous. I dropped my bike twice and I fell from it once. If you are disappointed by roots then this is not the trail for you. Takes an hour and a half, if you decide to walk in few places. I'd definitely take it soon to build my skills
Thank |Awesome and flowy! Some great natural and man-made features. Totally manageable by a newer rider but has some features to help more experienced riders hone their skills.
Note that there is a beginner loop across the street that makes a nice warmup - there is also a nice skills course as wel. Neither P1 or the beginner loop drain all that well - please exercise restraint if the trail surface isn't suitable for riding.
Thank |Fantastic trail, lots of features great technical sections
Thank |Weird at he end because there is bad marking where to go at the end, but overall very fun
Thank |Rooted. Had fun riding this one with my mom! When you come out to the highway it was confusing. I had to ask to get directions. But once I found the trail again the last part wasn't even a mile. One climb then it's all down hill we'll mostly.
Thank |Great beginner trail. I like Phase II better because less roots.
Thank |I'm rating a 5 as the best.
Thank |I'm from Maine and I found Alum creek single tracks fantastic. I can't wait to go back next weekend.
Ran the beginner loop a few times last evening. Great trail and some work has been done recently to add some technical tight turns and log overs. Great place to get your mtb legs.
Thank |Great trail, very well maintained. Met some friendly people as well
Thank |Great trail, I rode this almost every weekend during high school. Can be as technical as you want it to be.
Thank |After riding phase II and never going to phase I based off of reviews and comments I decided to try it out. Should've ignored everything, hands down way more fun, way more fluid, better obsticals, and better sections for picking up speed. The trail was maintained well, few muddy spots from previous weather, and leaf pow to the fullest. I had a blast and did double hot laps. Worth a visit. Good work Ohio
Thank |COMBO maintains this trail well. Its a great ride with some nice challenges and bridges. My only complaint is the roots. MANY roots. On my hardtail this was brutal. But its a well worn and ridden trail. The roots take some of the challenges and make them harder IMO.
Thank |The trail seems to be decent singletrack with little elevation change. There are few obstacles and the trail has average flow. This would be a great place for beginners to start challenging themselves, if the trail would dry out. I'm used to dealing with Ohio's slow drying trails, but this trail takes it to another level. It may actually be worse than Findley State Park.
Thank |She's old but she ain't dead. COMBO is putting in a lot of work in phase I. They're a lot of new bridges and they've been armoring some wet spots with rock. Still some mud out there though. If you like roots, and I do, it's cool, there's a lot. Mostly small ones, pretty easy still.
Thank |Im not going to repeat the warnings about the drainage of this track after a storm. Bottom line, before you ride goto ComboMTB.com to check track conditions. The riders in the Columbus area are very good about posting track conditions on this forum. I think this trail would be awesome if it were dry, but when I went it was still wet even though it hadnt rained for a few days and everything was a mess.
Thank |This is a relatively flat, rooty trail but with some good flow. My legs were tired from riding Chester Ridge earlier in the week so it felt good to do a few laps here and not have all the elevation.
Thank |Nice trail with good flow, some short climbs with some areas that offer some technicall challenge due to all the exposed roots. I havent mtbiked in a while due to work but it was enjoyable but with enough of a challenge.
Thank |
