Mountain Biking Blackhand Gorge
#76 of 116 mountain bike trails in Ohio
If you are looking for a simple relaxing ride through a beautiful and historical area then this is the place. Paved trail, which is shared by walkers extends for approx. 4.7 miles into Ohio's only bike trail in the state's Nature Preserve system. This trail is an out and back trail and is mile marked. Terrific scenery for photo's. Preserve sits on 965 acres and parallels the Licking River, a favorite of kayakers and canoers.

From I-70 at Zanesville, take S.R. 146 west, past Dillon State Park. Continue on S.R. 146 to Toboso Rd(SR273). Turn Left onto S.R.273 continue to intersection of 273 and 278. Black Hand Gorge is at the intersection.
this is not a mtb trail. it is a paved bike path.
Thank |I encountered this trail when looking for the locks of the Ohio and Erie Canal as one is located there. Park in the formal parking lot at the eastern end of the park near Toboso (rather than in the unmarked lot at the western end). From there, the trail is a very straight and mild descent along the route following the edge of the Licking River and then a mild uphill on the return. Along the way you'll cut through a quarry, run under a train tressel, and see the canal lock, which is on the north side of the river. This is not a busy area so it is an excellent nature trail for those who prefer to remain on pavement. A few tree roots passing under the pavement cause bumps along the way, but overall, the ride is worthwhile. I particularly enjoy this ride when the water in the river is clear and scenic. You would be wise to have a camera with you on this ride.* Review edited 1/21/2010
Thank |This trail is actually in the village of Toboso, Ohio. I used Zanesville because it is one of the larger towns nearby.
