Mountain Biking Buchanan Pass

*****   Add a review
#230 of 1,392 mountain bike trails in Colorado
#1,944 in the world

Begin going west from the parking lot on the 4x4 road. Very shortly, there will be a trail that drops to the right and crosses the creek--that's it. Follow it 4.5 miles to the wilderness boundary and return. Alternate route--follow the 4x4 road up the south side of the creek until it crosses and come back down the Buchanan Pass trail for a loop if you like technical descents. If you like technical climbs, do the loop in reverse.

Really enjoyed this trail. Lots of fun rock structures to work on your riding skills. Super fun to come down -- lots of rocks and log drops to ollie over. My only complaint was that I wish the trail were twice as long.

This is an awesome trail. Like said, it is rocky, but not like Heil Ranch, these rocks are bigger and solid, not small and loose. The first 3.5 miles are not a tough climb, if you're somewhat experienced, the last 0.5 or 1 mile, there will be some hike-a-bikes for sure. The downhill is awesome, but I wish the trail would be little steeper. It sucks that the bikes aren't allowed in the wilderness areas, would make it nice long day ride. There is also a river crossing, further up the river there is a big fallen tree to carry your bike through. Most people are somewhat surprised to see biker up there and seem unsure if they are allowed. Oh and its quite muddy right now, so if you don't like getting dirty, wait a month * Review edited 7/4/2011

Gotta' review my own submission to get this one going. I absolutely love this trail! Be advised, it's one of the rockest rides you'll ever do. The trail is consistently covered with rocks of all sizes and shapes. A decent rider will have about 3 hike-a-bikes and another half dozen dismounts on the way up, maybe half that on the way back down. It's so much fun in both directions, I prefer doing it as an out-and-back, rather than making a loop with the Middle St Vrain Road. Even when forced to dismount (intentionally or unintentionally), I love this ride. I find this a particularly pleasing stretch of woods, even by Colorado standards. While the rocks are constant, large, and challenging, the grade is moderate, making this ride a dream for anyone who prefers a technically challinging climb to an aerobically challenging climb. And the trip back down is killer! For many, the constant rocks are a drawback. I only see two drawbacks--the short distance to the wilderness boundary and the frequency of equestrian use (trail is next to a dude ranch). Be ready to share, but it's well worth it! * Review edited 7/30/2010
