Mountain Biking Hickory Glen

***   Add a review
#56 of 322 mountain bike trails in Michigan
#2,209 in the world

The trail loop is 5.7 miles. Look for yellow arrows (some at eye level and some higher) pointing you in the correct direction of the trail loop. Carsonite-type ground markers have also been installed and blacktop path intersections to clarify the MTB trail direction. The trail makes its way around most of Hickory Glen Park and at about the 4 mile mark you'll find yourself back on the blacktop bike path heading towards the EAST end of the park. You'll cross over a very nice floating bridge and board walk, and just after you are over the board walk the trail picks back up on the left. After you finish this section of trail, you can pick up the MTB trail again on the EAST side of the blacktop path. After a quarter mile you'll be dumped back on the blacktop path. Take it back over the floating bridge and pick up the MTB trail on your left again and follow back to the trailhead.

Getting there
If you exit I-96 at Novi road, go north on Novi road. Novi road turns into Decker road with out any warning, so just keep going straight untill it curves to the left and ends at South Commerce Road. Take a right on South Commerce Road. Go 1 mile, and when you get to the 1st traffic light, take a left on Glengary road. Take Glengary road for 1/2 mile untill you get to a yellow sign on the right with a picture of a bike and the words "250 feet". Turn right about a quarter mile past this sign at the entrance to Hickory Glen Park. The actual sign for the park isn't visible until you enter the park, so keep your eyes open or you'll miss the park! The trail head is just off of the paved bike path.

this trail is very twisty the forest is great the reason I called it intermediate is because you must pay attention at all times and there are some features that beginners would have problems with although there's ride around most of these beginners could ride this trail but might not have fun overall its a fun trail for seasoned riders could be longer but they did make the most of what they had to work with

Eh, is the word that came to mind after riding it. Pretty good for first-timers, and they have a skills section at the end of the trail. Decent riding when you are short on time, have a newcomer with you or want to practice braking and tight turns. Only a few sections where you can catch speed with so many twisty turns. Not a bad place to ride, but with so many other good choices in the area I won't visit very often.

Love this trail system. Lots of unchartered options and you can start at Richardson Center then through Hickory Glen connect to proud lake trails and onto MILFORD and Kensington & beyond, all down along the Huron River.

Pretty easy, no real climbs with a couple of decent tech features. Can be a bit over grown, I saw a lot of poison ivy tangling over the trail last time I was there. A good first trail for a someone new to singletrack.

Really fun twisty single track with some tight trees and plenty of fun trail obstacles to play on. Well marked, well maintained trails, well worth the hour drive from Detroit.

Great trail for a moderate ride. Some technical stuff that you can go around if you prefer and a lot of cornering.

Good beginner course, nothing too intense. Lots of log piles and other features along the way to keep it interesting.

Trail is MUCH BETTER now that it is clearly marked. I wasn't a fan of it until recently - once you get a few good laps in you find speed in places you never expected and it becomes pretty fun. Not a technical trail by any stretch, but the option is there to challenge yourself.

Not fast and flowy like the tree farm or island lake - but if you understand that going in this trail is a gem.

Decent beginner trail. Wasn't as much speed/flow as I would have liked. No major climbs. Handful of fun objects scattered throughout the trail. Middle section of the trail got a little confusing as it was poorly marked. It's worth a ride, but I didn't find it as fun as most of the other local trails in SE Michigan.

Very nice trail, especially for beginners. Only 1 significant climb, and the trail is overall flowy and not too technical. A few large log piles were added recently, and don't have bypasses. There's also a new skill section with different shinnies, banked turn, and a small wooden wall ride. Lots of opportunities to bail out on to the paved path.

Tight and twisty trail. Beginner friendly. Not very well marked but usually well maintained. Drys quickly.

I personally really liked the trail. Lots of tight turns and in the middle of the trails there are a few jumps and wood ramps, but always paths around them. There were a few low trees that need to be cut, but as long as you pay attention you won't hit them. Compared to other trails in the area, not a ton of elevation change. I can agree that it is pretty poorly marked, but for the most part you can always get back to the paved path if you keep riding.

Not a big fan of this one. Super right and twisty. Markings are hard to decipher in a couple of areas, but pretty well maintained. Lots of little "unseen" obsstacles (like tiny cut off tree trunks) reach up and grab your cranks. Good place to come practice navigating switchbacks and trees, or jumping over logs, but not many fast sections.

Not rideable currently, a lot of downed trees blocking the trail nearly got clothlined by one. Also poor trail marking very easy to get turned around

Overall, I felt the trail was pretty flat, not very well marked, and somewhat on the boring side of things. Def a beginner trail with lots of twists and turns.

This is a great technical trail which reminds me a lot of the Milford Trail. It's tight and requires you to keep on your toes. You can also head over to Proud Lake to the west using a combination of the paved trail along with the service roads of the Proud Lake Rec area. Trail signage could be a little better.
