A smiling cyclist in a helmet and sunglasses stands next to a wooden trail sign marked "Sierra," with a mountain bike leaning against it. The background features a sunny landscape with patches of grass and shrubbery, under a clear blue sky. Sidewinder mountain bike trail.

Mountain Biking Sidewinder

****   Add a review
#23 of 319 mountain bike trails in Idaho
#2,475 in the world

The trail bobs and weaves for the first half mile, and then it starts to bounce
upward. The steepness of the climb is offset by the roll of the trail (i.e. every
steep uphill is preceded by a brief downhill). Eventually, the Sidewinder passes
through a gate and meets up with the motorcycle trail. The motorcycle route is
very loose and rocky (shale), but it does meet up with the rest of the Kelly
Canyon trail network at the summit of Kelly Mountain. Ride safe!

Getting there
Follow directions toward Kelly Canyon Ski Resort/Heise Hot Springs. After you
pass the hot springs, the golf course and then the red barn, turn right onto East
Heise Road. Follow the road until you reach a public parking area with trailhead
signs for Stinking Springs. There is a spring-loaded brown metal gate across the
dirt road from the parking area where the Sidewinder begins. (It's not the dirt
bike route.)

Rider questions

Q: What's the parking like?
A: Parking is located at Camelsback park or Military Reserve. Its a bit of a climb and traverse either way to get to Sidewinder, although one climb is much steeper and shorter than the other.
