Mavic has long been seen as a hold out in the world of mountain bike wheels, having previously only produced alloy rims. Today, Mavic just announced their first-ever carbon MTB rim: the XA Pro Carbon.
Carbon has gained massive popularity as a rim material among the mountain biking elite (or those who can afford to purchase elite-level equipment), and has largely been popularized by ENVE. With the release of the XA Pro Carbon, Mavic responds to the ever-increasing market demand for carbon wheels.
The XA Pro Carbon is available in 27.5 and 29, and Mavic claims that it “perfectly balances lateral stiffness and vertical compliance” — the key carbon buzzwords. According to Mavic, “The result is a ride that maximizes the benefits of carbon, accelerating on demand, with superior control and traction.”
Highlights (from Mavic):
- Full-carbon rim for maximum responsiveness, enhanced fiber lay up provides maximum vertical compliance
- 100% UST Compliant With the added benefit of a hookless design which reduces weight and increases durability
- Weight: 1490g for a 27.5″ pair, 1600g for a 29″ pair.
- 26mm internal width (32mm outside)
The wheels will be available for sale on September 1, and they will retail for $1849.90 for the set.
