As a graduate of one of North Carolina’s most lenient high schools, I can tell you that it is a gorgeous state with heaps of mountain biking on offer. Now North Carolina takes that great tradition even further by inviting riders to compete in fat biking on the sands of Wrightsville beach.
But wait! Isn’t fat biking something one normally does in the winter while waiting for their extremities to freeze off? Yes! But why should it be so? If a big tire can roll on snow, it can roll on sand. That’s science, and nothing ever disagrees with science. Nothing! Ever!
The US Open Fat Bike Beach Championship invites you to bust out that big wheeled beast and thrash it up on the sands of Wrightsville beach, which is also a great place to drink a little too much and get lost on your way back to your hotel. …or so I’ve heard.
Here’s race promoter Shawn Spencer’s take:
As the home of the PPD Beach2Battleship Triathlon, Quintiles Marathon and Carolina Cup SUP, it is only appropriate to introduce fat bike racing to the east coast in the sports hub of Wilmington and Wrightsville Beach
I wish I lived a bit closer to this race. I would be happy to mark the rear of the field for them.

The race will be held Saturday, March 14th. Prizes will be awarded to the top three finishers from each age category in each division, and on the following Sunday racers will have the opportunity to visit a nearby, uninhabited island for a 9-mile pleasure ride on the beach.
Proceeds will benefit the Wrightsville Beach Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to improving public parks and community amenities.
Sounds like a good time to me, and I already know Wrightsville beach is a cool little town. Great idea, guys!
