Mountain biking can be multiple things for riders, and those things can even change over time. What does the activity of riding trails mean most to you right now?
While not "all of the above" it is most of it. I have been biking since I was about 5 (I'm 68). And I have been riding off-road since in my teens (started with a road bike in the woods). So cycling has always been a big part of my life. I am not semi-retired (retired but overly committed to many things) and one of the biggest joys I get is passing the skills I've learned over the years to the younger generation. I am one of several coaches for a NICA/MICL middle/high school team and I enjoy riding with the kids teaching them skills, and helping them session tough spots. In addition, it is a great way for me to ride (solo or in a group) in places where all I can think about is the trail in front of me and "what's next." This helps me relax and forget about the busy lifestyle I've put in front of me.
Great question. My answer has definitely evolved over time, starting with fitness/exercise, then shifting to communing with nature, and today I would say community and riding with friends is the most important thing for me. And I'm sure my focus will change at least once or twice more before it's all over! MTB is such a deep and multifaceted sport, which is why I love it.
It’s all about the QUALITY OF LIFE one strives for. MTB along with Gravel and Roadie make for the perfect combination. Riding Gravel has honed my MTB riding beyond my expectations by being more tuned in to include balance and quick decision making. At 65 MTB allows me to continue to focus on mind and body fitness to include continuous achievement goals.
My vast bike collection has been growing for more than 40 years, how can it be choose one? Seriously!! Come on, Gerow, get with the program...
That collection is 18 bikes, some are FS, some are HT. A couple non suspensions and a couple one speed automatics. Not leaving out the two full fAts and the one midfAt!
The plussers are getting most of the attention. The middlechild is a singlespeed plus that is a slacker geo and feels very playful and fun, not to mention, trialsy. Trialsy is a key ingredient and requirement in a routine ride, don'tcha know.
I can rail my 3.0's against 2.ohhellno tire bikes every hour of every day!

"You can’t make me choose. It’s all of the above and more. MTB is life!"
