In high school I read a book titled, You Can Negotiate Anything, and it felt like I was being let in on a secret that grown-ups knew, but I didn’t. It turns out Herb Cohen may have exaggerated a bit, and just because you can do something doesn’t mean you should, at least when it comes to negotiating purchases. For many of us, the most painful part of buying an expensive item like a new or used car, or even a home, is haggling over the price.
Tell us about your experience negotiating a bike purchase in the comments below.

I was well supported by my LBS for several years and they sold me a couple bikes at cost. I was extremely local fast at the time and locally well known so it was basically what you called a sponsorship, and I was broke. I didn't negotiate because they gave me a stupid good deal on everything.
That shop has closed, and I'm no longer broke. I just look for stuff that I want on sale and decide how badly do I really want it.
Also, I fortunately live really close to Jenson's, enough so that I can call them my LBS without being disingenuous, which makes things convenient.
