Intense Cycles is reintroducing the aluminum version of their Spider 27.5″ trail bike. The alloy frame paired with their most affordable build kit, which they call “Foundation,” retails for just $2,399 — an impressive feat for a brand best-known for boutique mountain bikes.
Reports of Intense price reductions have been circulating this year, especially in the UK market where the US-based brand seemed especially overpriced. These lower prices, combined with the re-introduction of an alloy frame, yields a price point that is somewhat unusual for Intense. But it’s a price point that riders around the world will undoubtedly appreciate.
To put the cost of this bike in perspective, the high-end Spider SL carbon frame plus shock, retails for $2,499. That’s $100 more than this entire mountain bike!
The Spider Alloy Foundation build features 140mm of travel up front and 130mm in the rear. This version of the Spider runs 27.5″ wheels and features a 67° head tube angle. Complete weight for the frame is 7.76lbs.
The Alloy Foundation build specs a RockShox Revelation RC Solo Air fork and a RockShox Monarch RL rear shock to cover suspension duties. The drivetrain is a SRAM 1×11 mash-up of GX and NX components with a Race Face Aeffect crank. Shimano BL M506 stoppers take care of the braking and an X-Fusion Manic dropper post will drop the saddle by as much as 150mm–a great touch at this price point. Finally, the wheels are Race Face AR 27 with Maxxis 27.5×2.35″ Forekaster tires and Boost-spaced hubs.
The reintroduced Spider Alloy will begin shipping on February 16, 2018.
