Mountain bike flask holster

These days folks are making holsters and mounts for just about everything you might want to carry on your bike: iPod, cell phone, GPS, lights, water bottles, tool bags, etc. One holster you may not have seen (unless you looked closely at page 38 in last month’s Mountain Bike magazine) is the Ahearne Spaceman Flask …

These days folks are making holsters and mounts for just about everything you might want to carry on your bike: iPod, cell phone, GPS, lights, water bottles, tool bags, etc. One holster you may not have seen (unless you looked closely at page 38 in last month’s Mountain Bike magazine) is the Ahearne Spaceman Flask Holder from custom bike maker Ahearne Cycles.

The flask holster is designed to do just what you think it should: hold a flask securely to your bike frame. In fact this holster is designed to carry a specific flask made by Surly and Dirt Rag has the details on how this project came about:

Surly has made a flask for several years, and one night, Ahearne and his friend Billy Spaceman were trading pints at a local dive bar when they had that “Hey, wouldn’t it be cool if…” moment. They decided to design a flask holster for the popular Surley flask, to be named the Spaceman Flask Holster.

According to Mountain Bike magazine the company sells about 500 of the $30 holsters a year which ain’t bad (seems like a great gift idea for the mountain biker who has it all). The only question I have is – is it legal to drink (alcohol) and ride? Obviously not too many manufacturers are making flask holders for cars and I’ve heard that in many states any law that applies to motor vehicles applies to bicycles as well. If it’s legal to drink and ride I suggest coming out with a 40-ounce holster and maybe something that can hold a glass beer bottle without rattling it around on bumpy trails.

A bicycle wine bottle holder? Not quite what I had in mind but this is the best I could find: 😉
