PNW just dropped a mountain bike stem they’ve deemed worthy of the name “Loam.” The brand has typically reserved the Loam label for their most premium products, from dropper posts and remotes to pedals and bars. The PNW Loam stem is CNC machined in Taiwan from 6061 aluminum alloy and is available in four shiny metallic finishes. Two lengths — 32mm and 40mm — are on offer, and buyers can choose from a 31.8mm or 35mm bar clamp diameter.
PNW Loam stem specs

- Four colors: orange, purple, silver (shown), and black
- Weight: 164.2g as tested (35mm diameter, 40mm length)
- Price: $99
- Buy from PNW Components
I installed the new PNW Loam stem on my Canyon Neuron trail bike, along with a fresh PNW Loam carbon handlebar featuring a 35mm clamp diameter. The Loam stem has a large open area between the clamps that makes it easy to center the bars, especially PNW bars which come printed with alignment marks. So satisfying.
Two bolts with T25 heads, both on the right side, attach the stem to your steerer tube. Four T25 bolts attach the face of the stem with no gap required at the top for easy installation. Since the stem is zero rise, you could technically get away with installing it upside down, though the printed graphics will give away the mistake.
At 164g, the PNW Loam stem isn’t lightweight by any means. It looks chunky yet sleek and has a solid feel, which most riders will appreciate over something less substantial.
I’ve only got one ride in on the PNW Loam stem, and honestly, barring some crazy mishap, I doubt I’ll learn much more even if I use it for hundreds of miles. What I can tell you is that it looks good, is easy to install, feels solid, and is a good length for my cockpit setup. PNW notes that they don’t have specific plans to offer additional lengths, though they may add options in the future depending on demand.
