If you’ve seen me around town or at an event, chances are I was wearing a Walz cycling cap. I first got turned onto Walz caps by my friend Gike and purchased a wool cap about 15 months ago at my local bike shop. Recently Walz sent me another cap to try and I’m really stoked on it too!
Walz offers three and four panel caps in a variety of patterns, colors, and materials. The hats are super soft and flexible with a short, stiff bill up front. I really dig the look–it’s low profile and lets people know you’re a cyclist even when you’re not on the bike. Of course I’m a hat guy (I avoid combing my hair in the morning) so I wear my Walz caps pretty much every day.
My wool Walz cap is based on the company’s 3-panel design while the cotton cap I tested is based on the 4-panel design. The 4-panel cap fits tighter than the 3-panel, for an even lower-profile look and feel.
Walz caps are designed to fit under a cycling helmet; the wool version can be used for added warmth on cool rides while the moisture wicking cap does just what you’d expect. There’s also a cotton blend version (the plaid hat pictured) with a moisture-wicking band to keep sweat out of your eyes.
And that little half-bill? It’s almost a perfect stand-in for the large, plastic bill included with many mountain bike helmets. Do yourself a favor and ditch the windsail on your helmet in favor of a cycling cap.
Walz offers personalization on all their caps for just $5 extra. I got my cotton cap embroidered “SINGLETRACKS” and it looks great! They also offer screen printing and sublimation (same process as a jersey) for an even more customized look, though this process takes longer and there are order minimums.
If you’re looking for some protection from the sun and sweat this summer, check out the Walz website. Caps start at just $19.99 and shipping is free for US customers. Just don’t order the same style as me–these are my signature looks. 🙂
Thanks to Walz for providing the plaid cap for review.
