I want a tire that provides decent grip, rolls well, doesn't weigh too much (<900g for a 27.5 x 2.35"), and isn't a rip-off ($60 or less). I've never really had durability issues with any tires so that's not too much of a concern.
The first thing I look at is weight because I have a max limit as opposed to most people that compare about weight are weight weenies. Not that it matters much because I don't go looking for anything other than the 2.5 DHF/2.5 Aggressor and 2.4 Dissector
This seems like a bit of an incomplete survey, to me. I would personally split up the category of "tread pattern" into different specific characteristics of a tread pattern, such as braking, cornering, mud clearance, rolling resistance, etc.
first, second and third; grip of the compound itself (not the tread) on wet roots and rocks. then comes a compromise between robustness and rolling resistance. its hard to get both, but there are some rare exceptions. a widely unknown factor is that with a given tyre, wider rims improve rolling.
tread pattern has actually quite little to do with grip, as long as there is a decent form of pattern, with very important; sharp edges. high knobs soon round off, low stay sharp.
for example thunder burt is very surprisingly a more than passable winter tyre in packed conditions. because the pattern is low, its great numbers of knobs stay sharp, and its rubber compound is compliant enough. (there are definitely better winter tyres out there, just took it as an illustrative example)
