Been dirtin since the 70's and have seen so much change in technology as well as handling technique. Much time spent sharing with others on the trails and such. That camaraderie is not replaceable in any way.
Taking up trials has also lead to some fun trail antics. Highly recommend learning trials basics for mountain riding.
I have been dirt riding since I was 6 years old way back in the 60's and I've seen a lot of changes in bikes and riding styles and techniques. I have always tried to adjust my techniques to fit in with the current bikes and style of riding I'm doing. I am now a NICA coach and as such I have attended two "On The Bike Skills" classes to prepare me to coach new riders. I actually learned a few things and now I'm working to "unlearn" old habits and move to the new techniques. I am seeing an improvement in my riding.
The folks not getting some coaching are missing out on progression and fun. They don’t know what they don’t know. Just because you can pedal a bike in the woods does not mean your riding your bike in an optimal manner. Your bike may be riding you. Good coaching is worth way more than just about any bike component upgrade.
