Gambrill State Park, Frederick, MD
While nearby Patapsco State Park and Schaeffer Farms get all the love, the slightly more remote and far more rugged Gambrill State Park gets neglected. I can certainly see why, though, as you’ll be hard pressed to find any flow within the park’s trail system. Some trails are a constant bed of angular, ledgy rock with nary a smooth section to be found. There’s no individual feature that requires advanced skills, but the constant irregularities will tax most riders. Rhythm? Probably not going to happen. Even the easy trails make little concession for the wheeled traveler.
Which is why I like this area so much.
You want flow? Make it yourself. Think you’re Zen? This place will let you know rather quickly.
For me, this all adds up to a trail system that bears repeated visits. Have a good day here and you know you’re in the zone.

And yes, Greens is my fave, but the cat's already out of the bag on that one. Part of the joy of Agate is it's also the one descent you're likely to have to yourself.

But over 1/2 of everyone I've taken on it won't do it again. I think it's because they think it's gonna be a DH and they get worked on it.
I love that I've cleared everything on it, but never on the same ride--there's always a challenge there.
