Happy new year, and happy new trails! January isn’t necessarily the best time for trail work in many places, but in some it’s the perfect time to move dirt. Here are the trail openings we’re tracking this month.
Big Rock Quarry Park (Little Rock, Arkansas): There are big plans to turn Big Rock Quarry Park in Little Rock into a destination for mountain bikers and this month a pump track was opened for riding.
Gordy’s View (Seeley, Wisconsin): This new groomed, fat bike trail opened for the 2021-22 winter season. CAMBA says, “Gordy’s View was designed as an alternative to single-track — a more relaxing ride on a wider trail that still provides a near-wilderness experience. This six-foot wide winter bike trail offers mostly easier riding with a few challenging hills including the Penman Plunge, with some pretty spectacular views. […] Gordy’s View was named after Gary ‘Gordy’ Penman who had a vision to connect multiple trail networks from Downtown Seeley and the Sawmill Saloon to Uhrenholdt Forest and Seeley Hills Trails up to the Birkie Ski Trail.”
Loyston Point Recreation Area (Andersonville, Tennessee): The new 6.7-mile-long Clinch River Loop trail officially opened at the Loyston Point Recreation area, bringing the total mileage for the trail system to about 30 miles.
Northwoods Trails (Hot Springs, Arkansas): The already extensive Northwoods trail system added 2.5 miles of new trails, and Rogue Trails rehabbed some of the existing trails as well.
Peaks View Park (Lynchburg, Virginia): The quarter-mile Hamster Kitty trail opened at Peaks View Park recently and is said to be “flowy.”
