2 new trails open at Brown County in Indiana
The State of Indiana and Hoosier Mountain Bike Association officially opened two new trails in Brown County State Park on October 7. The mile-long West Gate Trail is rated for beginners while Gnawbone is a 1.3-mile directional trail that descends from the West Gate trail. The trails were constructed in part using a $200,000 Next Level Trails grant awarded in 2019.
O’Dea is first to ride the entire 5,900-mile Eastern Divide bikepacking route
Seventy-eight and a half days after starting his ride in Newfoundland, Eddie O’Dea rolled into Key West, Florida and the southernmost point of the continental United States. O’Dea set out on the trip as a fundraiser for the Georgia Cycling League which as raised tens of thousands of dollars so far.
According to Trackleaders, the route ended up being 6,018.5 miles long with 165,556ft of climbing. O’Dea averaged 9.5mph and covered an average of 76.5mi per day.
Thetis Lake Regional Park adds 7 miles of singletrack
Mountain bikers in Victoria, BC have 12km (7 miles) of new trails to ride. The latest trails at Thetis Lake Regional Park were built with mountain biking in mind following new guidelines established in 2021.
Upper Tyrolian trail officially opens
The Upper Tyrolian trail in Tahoe National Forest officially opened this week. The Tahoe Fund non-profit says “together with the U.S. Forest Service and Sensus R.A.D. Trails, a trail building nonprofit by local freeride mountain bike athlete Cam Zink, TAMBA converted old logging roads into nearly two miles of sustainable singletrack trail that connects Tahoe Meadows off Mount Rose Highway to the existing Tyrolian Downhill Trail.”
Mountain bike skills area and small trail network proposed for West Dunbartonshire
The West Dunbartonshire Council is soliciting feedback on a proposal to create a mountain bike skills park and small trail network in Balloch Castle Country Park. Beyond simply creating a bike park, “an aim of this project is to start a cycling club based at the park, which will provide formalized cycling activities especially for young people from the local area.”
Trail system proposed for Spring Brook Valley in New York
Lindsey Bartolomei and others in the Rochester, NY area are advocating for a trail system dubbed the Spring Brook Valley Project. 18-mile connecting trail under construction near Gallup, New Mexico
An 18-mile trail is under construction along McKenzie Ridge in New Mexico with plans to connect to the new the Twin Springs trail system. Brian Leddy from Adventure Gallup & Beyond told the Albuquerque Journal, “This is going to be a big, epic, point-to-point trail.”
