Marstrand is an island located 50km northwest of Gothenburg, Sweden. At first sight you are met by what could be a scene from a Elsa Beskow story. The island is ridiculously picturesque with its colorful houses surrounded by Belgium block. The ferry ride is only a few minutes and when you arrive you are greeted by one of the most beautiful islands in the archipelago. You’ll find a good selection of restaurants, hotels and cafes; and as always here on the West Coast, the menu goes heavy on the fish.
The island isn’t large, and most visitors are satisfied wandering around in town. But if you want to feel the cool ocean breeze at your back, hear the seagulls screech, and enjoy a view of the endless sea, I recommend a walk up to Carlstens fästing. From that point there is a trail running in both directions. It’s about 5 km long and goes around the whole island. The trail is perfect for riding, and if you feel like exploring off the beaten path, it’s only your imagination and skill that limits where you can ride along the rocky landscape.
Riding here beats all of my previous MTB experiences–not because it’s better than anywhere else I’ve ridden, but because the whole package makes it unforgettable.
As the sun starts to set over the island and you head back toward the ferry, you already start to miss it. Life is sweet on Marstrand island.
