The North Shore Bike Park has announced that it is closing its doors on March 30th, 2025, at 10pm. The park has been in operation since July 1, 2023, and provides 65,000 square feet of ramps, jumps, pump tracks, a foam pit, and more.
The closure comes unexpectedly, as the park had “just completed the new Foam Pit, reorganized the Airbag Zone and added new terrain.” Until the doors close, North Shore Bike Park is encouraging riders to come out “and enjoy this brand new addition.”
Spring Break Camps will still proceed for the next month and a half, as will the final scheduled programs. The park will provide information on refunds for programs and parties scheduled after the end of March.
What is replacing the bike park?
While the park is located in a former Sears store in the Capilano Mall in North Vancouver, plans call for the Capilano Mall to be demolished and the 16.5-acre site to be redeveloped with 11 towers ranging from 12 to 40 stories tall.
This plan has been in the works for years, and the demolition is reportedly still several years off. So what’s going to replace the bike park?
According to the Save the North Shore Bike Park Change.org petition: pickleball courts.
“While we welcome new businesses to the North Shore and believe our community could benefit from both amenities, we also hope the landlord will come to recognize how devastating it would be to lose a beloved, locally-owned establishment that has become an integral part of our community’s fabric overall,” wrote Kathleen Matthews in an update on the Change.org petition.
The indoor bike park business model is challenging
Indoor bike parks have had a tough go of it. The North Shore Bike Park joins the Wheel Mill in Pittsburgh, PA; the Mega Cavern in Louisville, KY; B-Line Indoor Bike Park in Calgary, AB; and Air Rec Centre in Maple Ridge, BC; which have all closed in recent years. Few indoor bike parks remain, although Ray’s original location Cleveland, OH, which arguably kickstarted the revolution, remains stalwart.
Searching for a new location
All hope isn’t lost. The North Shore Bike Park is actively searching for a new location:
“We are heartbroken by this news, but we are not giving up,” wrote the owners of the bike park. “We are actively looking for a new location and exploring every possible avenue to keep this community alive. We need your support now more than ever. If you or someone you know has leads on potential new locations or wants to help advocate for us, please reach out. Email us at [email protected].”
