Tara Llanes suffered serious injury after a bad crash at the Jeep King of the Mountain race at Beaver Creek on September 1. Tara landed on her head and back and she’s currently paralyzed from the waist down. Her coach, James Herrera, shared a great article about Tara and her ongoing recovery on Bicycling.com that is definitely worth checking out.
More importantly, James and others have established a charitable fund to help with Tara’s expenses and there’s even a dedicated website, TaraLlanesRoadtoRecovery.com where you can find out how to give.
Most people don’t realized it but becoming a professional mountain biker is not a very lucrative career choice. I’d liken professional mountain bikers to Indie rockers – always on the road, not much recognition, and a paltry paycheck (if any). Even the best riders with sponsorships have a tough time making a decent living and you won’t see any of these guys or gals on MTV Cribs. Most of a professional mountain biker’s pay comes in the form of loving what they do, but that don’t pay the bills. Even Tinker Juarez sells alot of the schwag he gets to provide extra income.
This is another great chance to give back to the community – support professional mountain biking!
